Hello Kathy
Harlech is in Llandanwg parish. Llanfair adjoins it to the south and Llanbedr adjoins
Llanfair again to the south. There are a lot more parishes fairly close by, just to
complicate things. I'd be tempted to start with Llandanwg and Llanfair and only move
outwards to Llanbedr, Llanfihangel y traethau, Llandecwyn if you don't find anything
in the 1st two.
Church records are quite good for both but many people were chapel. In Harlech there were
several denominations - certainly Methodists, Scotch Baptists etc. The Scotch Baptist
chapel is still there and in use and has a old graveyard (worth a look if you are there?),
I think it is the Methodist chapel which also has an old cemetery too. Both are in the
town itself.
The records for churches/chapels are scattered about. Many (all the church records) are
now available for loan at LDS libraries (film copies of the originals not transcriptions),
the originals are at Dolgellau Archives, but some are at the National Library in
Aberystwyth and some Scotch Baptist records are in Bangor University Archives. As the
chapel records are quite patchy, it might be best to try the church records first as these
are complete (more or less?) for the time you are interested in

>From what everyone has said, my ancestor who stated he was born in Llanfair
Parish, and whose children said he was from Harlech, was most likely born in
Harlech and maybe attended the parish at Llanfair seeing they are so close
to each other. However, I also see from Genuki that Harlech is in the
parish of Llanbedr. So, I should definitely check the records at each
parish.
Should one travel to these places, would they find the chapels still being
utilized today? Is there usually only one chapel per parish?
Thank you Maureen, and again to all the others who responded.
Kathy
