Dear Kay,
There were probably hundreds of Meuric ap Llewellyns in and around
1400. It would be essential to know a little more. The database
Betty mentions is great but is based on a slightly flawed book (JE
Griffiths "Pedigrees..."). According to the Myrick/Merrick book I
found, my Meuric was captain of the guard at Henry VIII's coronation
and was from Bodorgan. Mr. Myrick does not mention where he got his
information and I'm trying to verify it. I had hoped the Bodorgan
library would have some local history but they also have Mr Myrick's
book. However, John Burke gives me several generations.
Probably the most reliable source is PC Bartrum's "Welsh
Genealogies" which is over about 20 volumes. I have tried - and
tried to get a couple of those volumes but they don't seem to be
available for inter-library loan. While reading information on the
website of a University in the UK, I was interested to note that the
folks at the university say that Bartrum's publications in part are
not necessarily correct. I had been of the impression that he was in
fact considered accurate. There is, however, at least a volume (in
separate issues) of corrigenda, meaning that the originals need to
be cross-referenced! An online version is hoped to come out this
year or next(?)
To be certain of your connections, you should really be giving a
little more background. In the sea of patronymy, no one can be
identified by name alone. Location, connections and biographical
information (where possible - not possible for everyone, of course)
are required.
The question of "royalty" is interesting - there wasn't the same
social structure in (Welsh, pre-1283) mediaeval Wales as in
England. There was a royal or ruling class, a free class and a
bonded class but that's about it, simply. I wondered how you know
he wasn't "royal" if you don't know anything about him!
I did know a bit about Welsh "royalty" - that's why I used the
quotes. The people Burke gives me don't show up in any of the books
I have read or university sites so must not have been "royal". I
thought when I hit Owain Gwenydd that he was about as "royal" as the
Welsh would be. (following Burke's information) and certainly more
"royal" than anyone I ever expected to find on my family tree. :)
He shows up all over the books.
Thanks so much for your response. I really appreciate any and all
input here.

Ian
