Hi, Thanks for your reply. It was Reg from the Welsh Mariners website who
found most of the information for me. The only other information that I have,
and have passed on to Reg, is that John Thomas was sailing from Sydney to
Shanghai in 1865 when his wife who was aboard, gave birth to their eldest son,
also their first child. I have been unable to find a marriage for John
Thomas and his wife Elizabeth A. I have a copy of the baby's baptism record in
Shanghai, and it give the parents names as John Thomas and Elizabeth Anthony
(looks like) Thomas. at the moment I am stuck where to look next for John
Thomas snr's parents and was hoping that baptism records in Pwllhelli may be
available somewhere,
Thanks again
Ann
Have a look at the Welsh mariners website - there is a John Thomas born
Nefyn 1820 and on the 1881 census he is at Bangor.

Subject: [GWYNEDD] New member, looking for John THOMAS Pwllheli 1820
Hi list, I have just joined and need some help please in tracing my John
THOMAS who says he was born Pwllheli on 30th July 1820. I have no
idea
which parish he may have been baptised in, and i only got his birth date
from
his register ticket in 1846 when he was at sea. He says he first went to
sea
aged 9 as a cabin boy, and I know he spent much of his life at sea,
sailing
all over the world. He says when he was out of work his permanent place of
residence was Bangor. Are there any baptism records available that may
give
more details of his parents and place of baptism etc?
Many thanks for any help
Ann
