Subject: [GWYNEDD] Caerhun / Roewen
My PARRY family originated around Roewen, Caerhun and moved to
Deiniolen
in
the mid-19th Century though I know little about the earliest ones in
Caerhun.
I have been looking through the Probate Calendar on Ancestry and find that
the Roewen connection continued with the eldest brother apparently moving
several times between Roewen and Deiniolen. I have been trying to
identify
places in the census in case they give a clue to the earlier period.
In 1891 William Thomas PARRY was at what looks like TROEDRHIW, that is at
the crossroads just East of Roewen. I wonder if someone can confirm that
name on the census - RG12/4671 Folio 75 Page 2. The 1:10000 map appears
to
be Tr..d y rhyw so probably Troed y rhiw, FMP have transcribed as
Troedshiw
which should probably be Troedrhiw.
In 1901 they were at Bryn Rhedyn which seems to be North of Roewen around
Cefn y Cae and Coed Mawr. There is a Caer Rhedyn on a modern map so that
perhaps fits with it being in that area. This is interesting because the
house where they lived in Clwt y Bont is called Bryn Rhedyn so I am
wondering if they had lived at the Roewen earlier or named a new house
after
the family home in Deiniolen.
In 1911 and 1916 they were at Hyfryndle, I have not found this but on the
1911 census it is next to the Ty Gwyn Hotel in the order in the census
book
- by the way I have never used the 1911 List page before, it is very
useful
for small villages because it lists all the residences with description,
householder and summary of numbers. I presume this is the hotel in the
centre of Roewen, that could fit with him having retired and living in a
house in the village itself.
Wondering if anyone has any local knowledge of that area.
Still working on the earlier censuses!
