There were just years where the manifests are gone or perhaps just not
yet found. I just searched UK incoming by 1881 only, and got nothing.
I wondered if possibly she might have sailed into Ireland, sort of a
variation on people buying tickets to Canada when the US was their
final destination, considerably cheaper prices were the reason for
that.
Janice you might want to join theshipslist and see if anyone there has
"real" knowledge <G> and they are likely to know the whys and
wherefores.

I am trying to find a woman who arrived in the UK sometime between
July 24,
1870 and December 23, 1881 and can't. She was in the US in 1870 and I
presume she departed from New York or Boston or Montreal going to Liverpool
as her destination was Caernarfonshire. She is found in Caernarfon Dec. 23,
1881.
No arrivals during the 1870's or early 1880's come up at all in my
ancestry.com searching. Does anyone have insight as to why that would be?
They skip to 1890s, 1900's etc.
Thanks.
