PRESS RELEASE
"The Welsh in New York" -
Official word has been received in Poultney, Vermont USA that the film
documentary entitled, "The Welsh in New York", produced by Alfresco
Productions in Cardiff, South Wales <
www.alfrescotv.com>, will air in the
United Kingdom on the HTV network beginning November 23rd at 10:30 p.m.
(UK time). The series will continue for six weeks, although there may be
a break during Christmas Week.
The documentary by Alfresco Production's Senior Producer John Pierce
Jones, Researcher Inge Hanson, Producers Liz Lloyd Griffiths and Ronw
Protheroe will include presentations by Hollywood, CA USA Presenter Marc
Freden.
The documentary series will feature the stories of some famous Welsh
Americans having settled in New York City, NY such as: George Jones,
co-founder of the New York Times newspaper, Samuel Ellis, Ellis Island
legacy, and Robert Edwards, the Manhattan Edwards Millions legacy. The
documentary will additionally branch from New York City to several
northeastern US regions where the Welsh went after coming through Ellis
Island including such areas as Scranton, Pennsylvania, the "Slate Valley"
of Vermont and New York, and New Haven, Connecticut (tracing the story of
philanthropist Elihu Yale, founder of Yale University).
In the Vermont/New York Slate Valley segment, the documentary will center
on historic East Poultney which was Chartered September 21, 1761 by Grant
of Benning Wentworth, the Royal Governor of New Hampshire. East
Poultney is the birthplace of George Jones, co-founder of the New York
Times newspaper. Son of John & Barbara (Davis) Jones of
Montgomeryshire, South Wales, George was born in Poultney, August 16,
1811, approximately 50 years before the slate industry boom.
It is, however, anticipated the documentary will include a section of
Slate Valley Welsh history from the 1850s slate boom to the present time.
(That history includes a strong influx of slate quarry families from
North Wales.)
[Those of us outside the UK may only hope other networks will air the
production.]
