Dear All,
I'm trying to find the occupants of a dwelling in Llanfair Mathafarn Eithaf in every
one
of the censuses. I've been successful for 1911-1881 and 1841, where it was called
Dafarn
Goch, Brynteg (as it is today). However, I just cannot identify it in the 1851, '61 or
'71
censuses. I have used both Ancestry & Find My Past until my eyes hurt.
Please, can any lister with better lateral thinking powers find the missing census
entries?
The information I have is:
1841 - HO107/1363/7; f.22; p.7
WILLIAMS, Mary/F/55/Anglesey
WILLIAMS, Elizabeth/F/25/Anglesey
JONES, Grace/F/85/Anglesey
\\
1881 - RG11/5585; f.65; p.9
HUGHES, John/Head/Marr/M/31/Blacksmith/Llanfihangel Anglesey
HUGHES, Ann/Wife/Marr/F/30/Blacksmiths Wife/Llanfair-Af Anglesey
HUGHES, Elizabeth/Dau/Single/F/8/Scholar/Llanfair-Af Anglesey
HUGHES, Margaret/Dau/Single/F/6/Scholar/Llanfair-Af Anglesey
HUGHES, William/Son/Single/M/2/-/Llanfair-Af Anglesey

In George Borrow's "Wild Wales", chap.32, written concerning his visit to
the house in
August, 1854, he says the family there were JONES. He saw 5 children, the eldest called
Ellen, about 8 years old; the three eldest could read (so I guess there were two under
five years old). The children's father lived there, and also his mother, but the
children's mother was dead (in 1854; probably alive in 1851, to bear at least the
youngest
child).
Borrow also uses the house name Ty Gronwy, which I have also looked for, unsuccesfully.
The house was, I think, in the Enumeration District which was south of the road from
Pentraeth to Llanerchymedd. It is now, but the old (?drove) road ran in front of the
house, which would put it north of the dividing line, and hence in the other Enum. Dist.
The present occupant says that she drew water from a well called 'Gib', short for
Gibraltar, and there is property of that name nearby in the 1841 census (only).
From various sources, including Griffith's Pedigrees of
Carnarvonshire & Anglesey
Families, it seems that this modest house has remained
in the same (extended) family for
upwards of 400 years. Cymru am byth!
Any help, however slight, most gratefully received. I would appreciate the full census
references, so I can access the page images.
Diolch yn fawr,
Trevor (with a 'v', not an 'f')
