Morning Iolo
Have you got a fiche reader you can lay your hands on? The MI fiche for Llangyllog is
only 1.75 from Gwynedd FHS. I've got lots of them, but sadly not that one and I
won't be visiting Llangefni Archives until the New Year or I would have looked for
you.
Regards
Maggi

Subject: [GWYNEDD] Owen family of Cerrig Ddewi, Llangwyllog
My ancestor William Owen married Ellen Parry of Merddyn y Grepach in Llangefni
parish on August 29 1837, and his father’s name is given as Thomas Owen. William
was then a labourer living in Tregaean.
The censuses for Waen (1841), Tai Lawr, Rhosmeirch (1851 and 1861) and Tai
Newyddion, Rhosmeirch in 1871 (all in the parish of Llangefni) give his parish
of birth as either Llangwyllog or Heneglwys, and the year of his birth as 1811,
but the nearest candidate I have actually found was born in 1814. I am trying to
see if he might be connected to Cerrig Ddewi in Llangwyllog, and would be very
grateful if anyone has either the memorial inscriptions, or a transcript of the
parish registers, and can help to further my research)
There is a Thomas Owen living at Cerrig Ddewi, who died in 1855, and his will
does mention a son William.
Looking at the National Library of Wales wills, and the Rootweb Family Tree
Searches, I have have found the following Owen families:
William Owen, whose will is dated 1798, whose wife is Elizabeth Lewis, and the
Rootsweb Family Tree Search shows that he had children in the 1780s and 90s,
including a Thomas (1795-1809) so clearly not mine.)
Elizabeth Lewis then married a John Owen (evidently between 1798 and 1801), so a
Thomas who had a son born in 1811 or 1814 would not be the son of this marriage
(though as John is said to have been born in Llaneilian around 1755, he could
have been the son of an earlier marriage of John’s)
Another possible father for Thomas would be Owen Williams of Cerrig Ddewi, who
died without a will in 1800, and a letter of administration was granted to his
wife Margaret Hughes. A Thomas Owen of Cerrig Ddewi is mentioned (the
relationship is not given, but he could be a son).
I would be grateful for any clues anybody could offer me.
Thanks.
Iolo
