Incidentally the Hidden Histories programmes described the advantages of
houses built of mud. I went to a lecture about the turf houses which were
common in the Highlands and probably the equivalent as built of the cheapest
source of local building material. Visitors to the area tended to write
them off as crude hovels but it was said they were very warm to live in
