Please could someone tell me on what date the GRO quarters are based?
Are they on the date of birth itself or on the date of registration of the birth?
Thanking you in anticipation.
Gwyneth.

Hi Gwynneth,
I would think that an entry in the GRO would be in the quarter that the event
(birth,marriage or death) took place.
This is an exact date whereas a date of registration is variable.
Hope this helps, Mike Jones.

Dear Mike, Gwyneth & All who may be interested,
Sorry Mike, not so. The quarter (of the year) is that in which the event was registered
*with the GRO*, not even with the local Registrar. Given that a birth or death could be
registered locally at any time up to six weeks after the event, and that the
'local' book
had to be filled before forwarding, this gives, potentially, quite a long 'lag
time' after
the event. Marriages, of course, were registered locally at the time <g>.
HTH,
Trevor (York,UK)
