My ggg grandfather, Griffith G, JONES b. 1751 in Caernarvonshire m. Gwen ___,
b. 1755 Caernarvonshire in about 1782. Family notes mention "Gareg Fawr -
Big Rock" I didn't know until recently that this was a place name. One
email from Wales tells me that it is a geographic feature near Caernarfon and
may pertain to the four or five farms around the area, and that the parish
would be either Betws Garmon or Waunfawr. (There is/was a Gareg Fawr Iron
Ore Mine nearby.) Another email says there is a Garreg Fawr "overlooking
Penmaenmawr. It is the site of a quarry." In that case, would the parish be
either Abergwyngregin or Llanfairfechan?
Griffith and Gwen JONES had five children b. Caernarvonshire: John G. 1783,
Hugh G. 1785, Robert G. 1788, William G. 1789, and Jane G. 1792. In 1800
they all emigrated to Utica, Oneida Co. New York. They farmed near Remsen,
NY. Griffith d. 1822 and Gwen, 1811. Both are buried in Capel Ucha Cemetery
near Remsen.
I want to know the place of their birth, their parents' names, and any
information about their families including siblings. Historically, which of
these locations might be the more likely choice in the 1750's? Would any
kind soul be willing to check christening and/or marriage records in the
above parishes? Any information or suggestions greatly appreciated. Thank
you. Virginia
