Subject: J.J. DODD
I have been researching the life and work of JOSEPH JOSIAH DODD, a landscape
artist who spent most of his working life in North Wales. He was born in
Liverpool in 1809, the son of JOSEPH and SARAH DODD - the family moved to
Tunbridge Wells, Kent by 1815. In the 1840s he was working as an artist and
teacher in Manchester where he married HARRIET BINNS in 1850.
By 1851 (Census) they had settled in Caernarfon, and by 1859 were living in
Bangor. They had four children:
THERESA, b.Caernarfon 1852, EDITH(or ELIZABETH?)AGNES, b.Caernarfon 1855,
CHARLES HENRY, b.Bangor 1860(living in Oldham 1890s), KATE JOSEPH, b.Bangor
1866.
JOSEPH J.DODD remained in Bangor until c.1888 and died in Oldham in 1894. He
had a brother CHARLES TATTERSHALL DODD (1815-1878), also an artist, who
married in 1855, JANE OWEN, daughter of JOHN OWEN of Dolgun, Dolgellau. They
settled in Tunbridge Wells where they brought up a large family.
Does anyone on the Gwynedd list have any connections with the DODD family?
Blwyddyn Newydd Dda i pawb - Best wishes to everyone for successful
researching in 2002.
