You don'tsay where you are, but if you are on England, you could look at the
GRO or sometimes called St.Catherine's House records, This will give you
the date fo birth which should be fairly easy as you roughly know the year.
Take note of the codes shown so you can apply for a birth certificate if you
want to.
You can send for one through the post from the local Registrars Office.
You
will find the address of the local one where your Gt.gt.grandfather was born
on

You could also look on the 1861/71/81 census.
