A big thank you to Aled L. Jones and Hafina Coppack for the help on the Welsh words and practices of the church on the Welsh Congregational Church list for Racine, Wisconsin.
Very much appreciated!
Kay Gavin
I am hoping someone on the list can help me with some Welsh words that are on a list of parishioners of the Welsh Congregational Church of Racine, WI in early 1850's.
There are 5 columns at the top (feel free to correct the spelling):
1) Enwau yr Aelodau
2) pa fodd y derbymiwyd
3) Pa Brud
4) gullwng ymaith
5) Nodiad
Under 2) trwy lythur and trwy broffes
Under 3) Hye 4th 1849
Under 4) ymadel
Hope this makes sense. Thanks for any help that anyone can provide.
Kay Gavin
A friend has a website about disused railway stations. He has a page about
Britannia Bridge Station, I wonder if anyone here knows anything about this
as there seems to little information and its location is not identified.
I came across one reference where someone speculated that the Britannia
Bridge Hotel was associated with it - this is listed in the 1856 and 1868
Slater's Directory.

Hello all,
Can anyone tell me the meaning of Shift in the profession, trade etc column for the 1841 census. It applies to a 45 year old woman living alone. I'm sure I've seen an answer to this but I cant remember where!!
Graham
Hello List,
I am thinking of transcribing a few years of the Llanenddwyn Parish Registers of Baptisms, Marriages, Burials (FHL#2419524) that were filmed by the LDS in 2007. The years I am interested in would be probably 1800-1810 or so.
My questions are:
1) Does anyone know if this has already been done?
2) If I do this, does it have to be in any certain format?
3) Who do I contact to have it put on the GenUki site?
Thanks.
Kay Gavin
Hello,
For those interested in the Welsh immigrant-to- America experience, I
HIGHLY recommend this book. I have the original Welsh edition and the
first English edition, but this new on will be even better, as Martha
Davies corrected a lot of translation errors and has fully indexed
this one! I have already pre-ordered 6 copies! Also, please note that
the free shipping on orders received before Oct. 1 includes shipping
overseas!
I am not receiving compensation of any kind for this endorsement-it is my personal opinion and I hope others find the book useful!
Mona
>From www.welshheritage. org :Our Newest Publication. ...."Hanes Cymry
America" has been retranslated by Martha Davies and will be available
October 1, 2008. The original book was published in 1872 in America
in Welsh to tell immigrants and those who want to move west about the
Welsh settlements all over the country. The author was a minister who
traveled widely and had friends in many places. The book gives
hundreds of names of settlers in various places, and describes their
homes, farms and businesses. It tells of all the Welsh Churches in
the country at that time, and discusses the terrain and the prices of
land available in various states. It is a goldmine for Welsh American
Genealogy. The cost of the book is $29.95 plus shipping. Orders
received before October 1st, 2008 will be shipped free of charge. To
place an order send a check or money order to GPWHP, PO Box 253,
Wymore, NE 68466-0253 USA, along with the address in which to ship
the book to. Orders will be shipped out in October.
Hello Maggi
Prior to the time you mention (Early 1850s) the very first Railway build
contracts were taking place in France. The first one was the Paris-Rouen Railway
in 1843 followed by Le Havre-Rouen and Dieppe legs (1847) also Cherbourg-
Mantes and Le Mans and more.
The contractor was Thomas Brassey ,a Cheshire man born at Buerton near
Chester who also had Bulkeley Hall (near Peckforton) as his home and works in
Birkenhead. He was a major contractor who with countless Navvies ,Masons &
Suppliers etc of all nationalities built major parts of the Railway network in
Britain and France not to mention many other contracts world wide including the
Canadian Grand Trunk with its Victoria Btidge over the St Lawrence..
I refer you to a book you may obtain through library service called "Life
and Labours of Mr Brassey" by Arthur Helps first published 1872 later editions
available. There is a chapter devoted to the early France contracts and
detailing a viaduct near Rouen that collapsed.
Everyone knows of the engineers Stevenson ,Brunel etc , but the contractors
were the main body of builders. Not a Mobile telephone,Car or Computer
between them.
I have no idea how you check any possible connection but I offer it as a
strong possibility and reason you might find ancestors in this area of France
around this time.
Ron B. (another Cheshire Railway man)
Hello all,
I have a problem with an entry in Llandderfel PR burials. Unfortunately I haven't got my copy of the CFHS transcriptions, so I cant check. There is a record of a burial of Sydney Griffith, aged 35, Dec 2 1831. Alongside is '[w/o Thomas]'. Does w/o stand for widow of or wife of? I am assuming the date to be correct, although if w/o is wife it makes quite a difference to my search for Thomas Griffith. Here's hoping.
Graham.
Hello Listers
I'm carrying out some research for a friend of mine and we have come across
one of her ancestors who was born in France in 1854. My friend has no
knowledge of the family's background and has no idea why they would have been
there-the birth place is actually 'near Rouen'. The father is a Publican and Cow
Keeper, born in Chester, name John RUSCOE and his wife, Elizabeth, was born
in Cheshire.
Their children were all born in Chester apart from this one. I suspect that
she might possibly be their grandchild as there is a 12 year gap between her
and the next child and the mother would be around 49 !!
I wondered if anyone had any ideas as to why someone from a family in
Chester with no obvious connection to employment involving travel might have been
born there at this time !!
Regards
Maggi

Since last year I have taken over responsibility as web-master for the Gwynedd FHS site in that I update the various web pages. I cannot access the 'guestbook link' but our hoster can. I regret to report that in the past, as some of you recollect, inappropriate and obscene postings, some in foreign languages were made in the 'guestbook', often generated automatically by search engines. The link was closed down for some time and following urgent request to the hoster a new link was formed whereupon a contributor entered a code but there were complications and the system abandoned. I have been in continuous dialogue with the hoster and he has finally assured me that he will create a link via my own e-mail where I will be able to monitor and filter all messages before posting them on our site. This will entail a day or two of delay. I will be just as relieved when this prolonged embarrassing problem is resolved.

Hi all,
The catalogue problem seems to have generated an enormous volume
of e-mails: I'm glad I wasn't alone. The nice man from Gwynedd IT is most
apologetic, fully aware that there is a problem ((as evidenced by all the e
mail traffic) and has "passed the problem onto the engineers". I'm sure
Rhagorol will live up to its name soon! Thanks for all the interest &
support.

Hi all,
I cant seem to get past the first page in the search function of Rhagorol. The IT man at Gwynedd was unable to find anything wrong at his end & I've tried adjusting internet settings but nothing has changed. Is anyone else experiencing the same problem? It's a most useful catalogue: saves much time in the Record Office.
