Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
I have just heard back form my coordinator for Anglesey. To the best of his
knowledge no N. Wales transcriptions are part of the database. They are in
need of more transcribers to move the work along. He is hoping to have
Anglesey completed by next Easter. I'm sure all volunteers are welcome.
Details are on the FreeCens web site below.
Best wishes
Margaret

Keith,
I'm interested in your reply. My 2x's grandfather, Robert Griffith, owned
the Virginia Pub on High St., Bethesda, in 1865. Where would I look to find
out if he had any problems that would have been recorded? He's in the
Slaters Directory of 1868, I believe it was. A son died there in 1865, so I
know he owned it then as I have the death cert.
Thanks,
Arlene

I tried to send this to Keith personally, but have a sneaking suspicion
it got lost. I should have sent it first to the group anyway, in case
anyone else could help.
I am still not certain whether this Robert is of any relation to the
ancestor I am searching for, but here is the logic behind my suspicion.
Richard Hughes (my great great grandfather) was from Caernarvon. He was
in the US by 1878, when he was married in Ohio. Before that he was
traveling as a musician, so I have no idea exactly when he left Wales. I
don't know the names of his parents, or his precise whereabouts- I'm not
even sure if he was from the city of Caernarvon or from Caernarvonshire.
In the publication "Y Cerddor Cymreig" there is a small article that
mentions my ancestor conducting the "Vaenol Glee Society Choir" in 1865.
According to Gareth Williams, author of "Valleys of Song", in the early
days of organized singing groups in Wales, the choirs were often formed
in or based out of pubs. Thus, I wonder if this Vaynol Arms had a glee
club. Is there any way to find out? Does anyone know how long the Vaynol
Arms stood?
Particularly interesting to me is the thought that Richard's ancestor
may have been a publican. Richard is remembered as having been a
drinker, and the woman he married in Ohio came from a strictly
non-drinking family. His son, Hugh Robert (the name Robert does not
appear on Richard's wife's side of the family- another reason I wonder
if this may be a connection) never touched the stuff.
Keith- How can you tell that Robert kept his nose clean?
Kindest Regards,

Hi Rachel,
I don't have much information about Robert Hughes I'm afraid. The first
mention of him I can find is in 1839 at the Vaynol Arms, and he is still
there in 1846. It is a pity that he kept his nose clean while he was the
licensee as all the publicans' misdemeanours were reported in the local
paper, which can give a very good background to their lives.

Rachel,
Have you tried a map from: www.multimap.co.uk
I have had pretty good luck on that site.

Subject: [GWYNEDD] Robert HUGHES- Publican at Vaynol Arms
Thank you Keith, for the directory listings- I have found what may be an
important clue as a result.

SO- In 1844 a Robert HUGHES is listed as a publican at the Vaynol Arms
on Palace Street. Is there any chance someone may know something about
this place? Might it still stand? I do not have any street maps for
Wales, so I don't even know where Palace Street is.
If no one knows any specifics, I would welcome suggestions on where to
begin to look.
Rachel
I am currently working on a Piece for the Anglesey project & will ask my
coordinator if he knows.

I suscribe to the Digest listing and this is the only North Wales list I'm
on. But over the past 4 years I have found it interesting and helpful.
Even though many of the postings do not relate directly to my family
history, I find the exchanges generally interesting, especially the bits
about traditions and history.
I do feel that current politics should stay well off the list, and am
grateful that we don't get messages about computer viruses etc.
Alwyn, I think you are doing a tremendous job as the list administrator, and
grateful for you willingness to continue doing so. I also enjoy reading
much of the information you provide to other list subscribers and am amazed
at the amount of help you give others.
yours in friendship,
tina

This has got absolutely nothing to do with Gwynedd!
As we have a number of American list members, I thought that some may be
interested in the latest offering from the Archive Hub about the best known
American artist, and that as it is from an UK site they might miss it:
+++++++++
Collections of the Month for July: July 13th 2003 is the centenary of the
death of the American-born painter, James McNeill Whistler (1834 - 1903).
The Hub includes a description of Whistler's papers, and papers of family
members, fellow artists, and critics.

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . But I would like to ask list members
if they think that having a similar site for the northwest Wales sites would
be a good or a bad idea.
Alwyn
Hello Alwyn,
I think the best idea is to leave things just as they are. We
are all different with very different ideas of what Family History means,
ranging from the John begat William and William begat Mary and so on school,
to those who want to know where they lived, what they did, where they did it
etc and all with pictures !
My wife Gwenda and I have, over the last 5 years, had a great
deal of pleasure from driving around N Wales looking for houses, ruins of
houses and gravestones, taking photographs, and sending them off to people
who might never have a chance of seeing the real thing.
We also enjoy the occasional thread but are perfectly happy
whenever the List Manager calls time !
In your only other on list reply to date, Judith apparently
takes a different line to me. As I said earlier, we are all different but
this is not important so long as we are all tolerant, and know when to bop
the delete button !
All the best,
Allen
