Dear list,
I wonder if anyone with access to Aberdaron MIs can tell me whether there is
an entry for Richard Parry of Pencaerau who d 1797?
I don't think there is an entry because I think his MI was hidden behind
some dry lining in the late 1950s but would appreciate if someone could
check.
For all those with Aberdaron ancestors, the church is being refurbished and
dry lining being removed possibly this year so "new" MIs may be uncovered.
Yours,
Ian

This may be useful for family historians who want to tie their research
to actual locations. I typed in "Wales" in the location search box and
got 664 hits. I believe it can be broken down further, perhaps by county
in Wales or England.
On the IMDB (Internet Movie Database) www.imdb.com, you can query films
by location

Hi,
A new article, "Christmas in Carnarvon 1903", has just been added. This can be found in the Miscellaneous Section.
http://www.rootsweb.com/~wlsccaer/
Regards,
Keith.
Hi,
I have just uploaded a description of the town of Carnarvon, taken from Edmund Hyde Hall's "A Description of Caernarvonshire (1809 - 1811)", and published by the Caernarvonshire Historical Society in 1952. I have also included a number of photographs, which will give those not familiar with the town a sense of what it looked like in years gone by. For those with a dial-up internet connection, the page might well be slow to load, but it is well worth while having a look. It can be found in the Miscellaneous Section.
http://www.rootsweb.com/~wlsccaer/
Regards,
Keith.
I am researching my ggrandmother Margaret HUMPHREYS (b.29.2.1856 in
Ffestiniog) who married Richard JONES (b.6.2.1857 in Glyn Ceiriog).
They lived in Blaneau Ffestiniog and Richard worked as a quarryman in
the slate mines. At the time of the 1881 Census they lived in Lord St,
Blaneau Ffestiniog, in 1883 they lived at LLwyn y Gill and in the 1891
Census had moved to Holland View, Blaneau Ffestiniog. Margaret died on
17.4.1894 in child birth and is buried at St Michaels, Ffestiniog
I believe Margaret's parents were John HUMPHREYS and Jane ROBERTS but I
have not verified this.
Richard and Margaret had the following children;
Jane Anne JONES b. 14 Oct 1876
John Ifan JONES b. 13 Oct 1878
Lewis b. JONES 14 June 1880 d. 23 Jan 1881
Richard Ceiriog JONES b. 6 Nov 1881
Margaret Olwen JONES b. 16 Nov 1883 d. Aug 1954 (my grandmother)
Blodwen Mary JONES b. 29 May 1887
Bleddyn ap Gryffud JONES b. 9 Sep 1889
Edward JONES b. 15 Feb 1893 d. 15 Feb 1893
Idris Wynn Owen JONES b. 16 April 1894
I was wondering if anyone on the list has any connection to Margaret's
family.
Thanks

Hello Gwynedd FHS members and listers
I'm pleased to say that the journal is finally being sent out in batches this week. There have been all manner of problems which have caused the delay but I hope you'll think it was worth the wait. Lots of interesting articles again and a 'spotlight' on Pwllheli. If there are any of you who may have inadvertently forgotten to renew membership for 2003, then its not too late. do let me have your comments when you've had a chance to have a browse and if you have any thoughts on where we should have 'spotlights' in the future, do let me have your suggestions. Spring 2004 will be Blaenau Ffestiniog and Winter 2004 will be Caernarfon. Lets have some articles from you as well. The more the merrier.
Thanks, Alwyn, for letting me use the list for this.

You will find information on the 'Journal' on the website for the Gwynedd Family History Society:
http://www.gwynedd.fsbusiness.co.uk/
Quoting from their site:
"Gwreiddiau Gwynedd Roots" is the official publication of the Society and is produced in April and November.
Hello,
Could you please tell me how to go about getting these journals, what needs
to be done?
Thank you
Jane Ellen

Well, I guess I got things started here on the list. I had asked about the
naming patterns originally because I noticed that in doing my Family History
that my Gr- Gr- Grandfather .......Hugh THOMAS named his firstborn
son........John THOMAS and then down the line it was another son, Hugh
THOMAS and then my Gr-Grandfather......Thomas THOMAS(which later was to
become known as Thomas HUGHES) Then when my Gr-Grandfather......Thomas
THOMAS married Ellinior JONES (Gr-Grandparents)from
LlanfairNeubwll......their first born was named John HUGHES.......so was
wondering if perhaps.....John might of been the first name of Ellinior JONES
father......for then the succession was after John HUGHES, William HUGHES,
then Thomas HUGHES and lastly Hugh HUGHES......I appreciate the feedback and
actually it is very informative to hear all the replies......for I too am in
the USA and for years have sought after my Welsh Heritage and really cherish
every tidbit I can get........
Thank You all so very much.
Lynne

Hello all. I'm wondering where the best place, or the most likely place,
would be for one to find pictures of old houses in Wales, farms, or
whatever for inclusion in a family history book that I hope to one day
make (sooner rather than later). I'm meaning as early a date as possible
- late 1800's?
I suppose museums, archives . . . does anyone know of any in particular
that they especially like?
I have seen a picture titled: The old mill Cottage that used to stand
alongside the old Bishops Mill Road ( down to the river from MaesG.) Some
of the foundation stones can still be seen. What a beautiful place it
must have been in its day.
on the web site following, it's a wonderful picture. I tried to enquire
to the person who has the site but have received no answer as yet.
http://www.matrasite.netfirms.com/Site/pasttimes.html
Click on "Past Memories" and then go to page 2, scroll down and you can't
miss the picture.
Does anyone from around Bangor recognize where this picture might be, the
one on the website looks like it's a picture of a picture in a frame.
Thanks.

Could someone tell me please if there is a formal order to the Welsh Naming
system for Sons. My Gr-Gr Grandfather was named Hugh THOMAS his sons were
John THOMAS, Thomas THOMAS(My Gr-Grandfather and also was known as Thomas
HUGHES) , Hugh THOMAS . Then the sons of Thomas THOMAS in this order were
named ..........John HUGHES, William HUGHES, Thomas HUGHES(Grandfather) and
then Hugh HUGHES. So this brings me the the Question.....Is there any
special order that sons were named for.........like for instance firstborn
after father or Grandfather? Am just trying to piece together things and
would appreciate any help one can offer on this.
Regards,
Lynne

Hi Sharon,
The best source for the information you need is the
Electoral Roll (ER, voting register), for c1938 for the village/town you
want, but this only lists those who are of voting age (21 for that period I
think). However, as far as I know the ER are not on line, so you will have
to rely on someone who lives in the area of interest to do the leg-work for
you. Unfortunately, I am not that candidate, but maybe someone out there
will volunteer
Good luck

I don't have a date on this second address but assume it is about the

A tip from Ian Hartas, the person responsible for the database programme that
operates the North Wales (and other) BMD sites:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Where it says "Initial" on the search forms, you can in fact enter the whole
first name, or part of it.
e.g. entering 'joh' will limit the results to show those whose first names
start with this string, such
as 'John' or 'Johanna'.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Very useful when you are looking for "Jesse Jones" and don't want details of
the tens of John and Jane Jonses born within the same "2 years either" way as
him.
North Wales BMD can be found on the URL below, as well as links to similar
projects for Cheshire, Lancashire Yorkshire, Staffordshire and the West
Midlands:
http://www.northwalesbmd.org.uk/index.html
All the best
