I have 'Sydney' (as christian name) listed as the wife of a Thomas on a transcript of an 1830's parish register. Is this likely to be a transcribing error or was it really a christian name given to women. I haven't encountered it before.
Lesley.
I am trying to trace a Catherine Jones, Widow, aged 74ish. There are
obviously a lot of Catherine Jones's but I can't determine which are Widows.
If anyone has access to the census on Fiche, could they please check the
following:
> Piece Folio
> 5265 43
> 5266 49
> 5266 62
> 5264 57
> 5265 17
All of these relate to a Catherine Jones, born Caernarfon, Pwllheli
district. If any of these are Widows, I would interested in the details.

Geraint
I wonder if anyone could possibly check the 1871 census for Nefyn. I'm
looking for a family living at Tan y Bragdy Nefyn. They should be John and
Ann Parry.

The John Hughes in
both generations were master mariners, but I don't know if the John
Hughes (m.Anne Morgan) was affiliated with the Brig Agnes or not. This
ship was supposed to sail out of Amlwch, but I can't seem to find
anything on it. I am not sure where John Hughes I came from, but I
suspect it was Amlwch. John Hughes II was also a master mariner and when
he retired from the sea, he was a draper in Amlwch. Again, I couldn't
get it to single-space (I think because it is pasted from a Word
document).

JOHN WILLIAMS was a master mariner whose family lived in Amlwch, ANG, in
the 1861, 1871, & 1881 census reports. John himself died between the
1871 and 1881 census reports, perhaps lost at sea. I don't know his
exact age or place of birth, except somewhere in Wales.
His first wife was MARY JONES and she probably died shortly after 3 May
1852, the date of birth of her daughter MARY JANE WILLIAMS
(1852-1905Liverpool); this birth was in 8 Court, Edmund St., Liverpool.
By the 1861 census the family was living in Amlwch, ANG and John had
remarried a MARY GRIFFITH (b.1827-28), and she and John had other
children: John G., William, Thomas R. Williams. It is possible that
there was a third wife named Mary between 1861-1881, but I can't pin this
down.
These are the known children of JOHN WILLIAMS:
MARY JANE WILLIAMS - b. 1852 Liverpool; m. G. M. HUGHES 1874
JOHN G.WILLIAMS - b. 1864 Amlwch - became a seaman (?)
WILLIAM WILLIAMS- B. 1865 Amlwch (became a joiner)
THOMAS R. WILLIAMS - b. 1869 Amlwch.
In the 1861 census, they lived at "Watermans Arms", Lower Quay St.,
Amlwch Trade directory says Watermans Arms owned/run by a RICHARD
GRIFFITH
In the 1871 census, they lived in Chapel St. (no house number), Amlwch
In the 1881 census, they lived at 20 Llaneilian Rd., Amlwch with MARY's
brother EVAN GRIFFITH (age 55, unmarried, sailor, b. Amlwch). John
Williams had died by now, but his son John G. Williams is also not in
that residence, perhaps at sea or married.
In Oct 1874 the ship Truant disappeared after leaving London, weathering
for sometime while off Deal (in the Downs). Her master and owner was a
John Williams, who seems to have been born in 1836, which would make him
about 16 years of age at the time Mary Jane Williams was born in
Liverpool. This John Williams had owned the Truant from 1872/73-1874/75,
according to Lloyd's Register. His certificate number was 22861, and he
became an only mate in 1860 and only master in 1864. Truants official
number was 22273. In October 1874, the Truant was sailing from London
for St. John's NB (New Brunswick, Canada?) with general cargo. She
sailed from Dartmouth on the 29th of October 1874 and was not heard of
after that. Before John Williams was owner/master, the ship had been
owned by a J. Jones, with a T. P. Jones as master. She was built in 1840
at Aberystwith and was owned first by T. J. Jones, then Jones & Co., then
T. Jones, then J. Jones, then J. Williams. The last port of Survey in
1872/73-1874/75 was Bangor, although the port of registry was
Abersythwth. Through her history, the masters had been E. Lewis, G.
Griffiths, J. Jones, D. Davies, Jones, T. P. Jones just before J.
Williams becomes master/owner.
Does anyone recognize this family?

Would SKS be willing to do a 1841 Census search in Denbigh, Wales for Jane Agnes JONES, whose mother's name was Laura Davis/Davies don't know her father's name? Jane Agnes Jones was born October 7, 1818.
Thank you so very much for your help. It is greatly appreciated.

Subject: [TSL] Collision 1878
This was originally posted to the Workhouse list but I have permission to
pass it along to our group. This dispute about burying the dead puts a
whole new light on things. I would like to know what ships were involved
in
the collision.
>From The Medical Times and Gazette 2nd November 1878 page 521
It is evident that some modification is imperatively called for in the
law
respecting the burial of the bodies of persons found drowned. At the kent
Quarter Sessions, held last week, the County Justices refused to
reimburse
Woolwich Parish the sum of £1,200 expended in the recovery and burial of
the bodies of the unfortunate sufferers in the late disastrous collision.
Application is to be made to submit the case to the Queen's Bench for
decision.
The loss to Woolwich Parish will be equal to a rate of 3d in the pound on
all the rateable property in the parish. It was stated at a subsequent
meeting of the Woolwich Local Board of Health, that, according to the
decision of the county justices, all bodies in future must be allowed to
float up and down the Thames until cast on shore. When that takes place,
the duties of burial will fall on boards of guardians, but those boards
are
prohibited by law from paying anyone for taking bodies out of the river.

Hello Marj,
This was the Thames pleasure steamer PRINCESS ALICE which was in
collision
with the collier BYWELL CASTLE and sank with the loss of 700 lives on 3rd
Sep.1878.
See www.basics.freewire.co.uk/Templates/ DLJune00/00ff08.pdf
Trust you are well.

The Princess Alice which collided with a collier 'Byfield Castle' on
September 3rd. 1878. The Princess Alice was a steam powered pleasure
steamer, and not an emigrant ship. Huge loss of life, and there were 544
inquests at Woolwich.

Some months ago, whilst at Macpellah Cemetery, Deiniolen, my mother and I struck up a conversation with a person who was looking for graves belonging to Tan y Graig, Deiniolen. If that person is on this list could he contact me as I can now link my family to this address early to mid 1800s'
Hywyn Williams
Thanks Arlene. Actually it was delete up to the .org.uk/ but I got there.

Good morning listers,
I came across a site for Wales which I think could prove quite useful to
researchers. It has the Welsh chapels database on it together with other
information concerning buildings of interest and archaeological sites. I
have not fully explored it yet but have found some things on it that I
have
found useful:
