Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
Most people who have put a Welsh surname and a north west Wales town into
Google or any other search engine will have come across Tom Rowlands'
extensive *Rowlands and others of Welsh origin site*.
Tom has written to me today to inform me that this site can no longer be
updated for technical reasons, so he has added a new URL for access to his
family tree. His message is pasted below.
I would recommend that anybody searching for family in this part of the woods
pay Tom's site a visit - if you don't find a relation there you are sure to
find a friend or neighbour of your relations. (Half of my class at school are
there! but I am still desperately trying to find a family connection ;-))
All the best

This is to let you know that I now have a web page at <A HREF="http://home.ica.net/~tjrowlands/">
http://home.ica.net/~tjrowlands/</A>. It is devoted the genealogy of "Rowlands
and other Families of Welsh Origin". and it provides access to data which I
can keep up to date by periodic updates.
My genealogy data has been accessible on the web for some three years at:-
<A HREF="http://www.uftree.net/UFT/WebPages/TomRowlands/ROWLANDS/index.htm">http://www.uftree.net/UFT/WebPages/TomRowlands/ROWLANDS/index.htm</A> This page
was updateable, and although it can still be accessed I have recently found
that updating is no longer possible.
You are cordially invited to visit my page and to use its resources.
Collecting the data on the Rowlands tree commenced some fifteen years ago,
the project being aimed at ensuring that my family, children and
grandchildren who came to our beloved Canada some thirty years ago or were
born here should not loose touch with their roots. It is only through the
help of many relatives and friends in many parts of the World that it has
been possible to bring the data together, and I take this opportunity to
thank them all.
It is a delight to hear from visitors who have enjoyed their visit to the
data, and providing that pleasure is a fringe benefit for me. However, I am
very concious that a great deal of information is still missing and that
there might just be errors here and there. All I can ask for is your help and
co-operation in improving the quality and quantity of the data presented.
Sincerely,
Tom Rowlands.

I've been asked by Dominic Johnson, FFHS Director of Education, to publicise
the FFHS Genealogy Award for Young People.
I've confirmed that the entrant does not need to have family members who
belong to Family History Societies.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Federation of Family History Societies is holding a competition for the
Genealogy Award for Young People.
There are two categories, one for those who are 14 or under
on 31st July 2002 and one for those who are 15 to 18 on that date.
Full details are at http://www.ffhs.org.uk/General/YoungPeople.htm
Although the Federation covers Family History Societies world-wide, the
decision has been made to restrict entrants to this, the first such
competition, to residents of the United Kingdom. The venture is somewhat of
a pilot scheme.
Quoting from the web page:
"Enter for the Genealogy Award for Young People by writing a story about
some character or family history event that is of interest to you."
Regarding the query about remarriage, I think it was common - especially in
the Western part of Caernarfonshire - for women to return to their maiden
names if widowed.
There is some confirmation for this custom in the case of Elizabeth George, mother of David Lloyd George. Following the death of her husband she reverted to Elizabeth Lloyd, as seen in the 1881 census, despite having her three children surnamed George living with her.
Does anyone know why the good ladies of West Caernarfon did this ?
My mother, a Parry from Bethesda, gave me her maiden name before my surname
and thus retaining an old family tradition in our family. I still use it
although I am now married.
Allen,
Just a long shot knowing that you live in lovely Criccieth. Do you happen to
know of a property known as `Cream Cot`. My great Aunt Patty 1874-1954 was
brought up and spent her young to mid age in Llanystumdwy but at some time
around the 1940-50`s she lived in the above house in Criccieth until she
died. I have vague memories of going, with my parents to visit her and
another g aunt Hannah Maria in Criccieth and the last visit to the town I had
a brief look for the cottage which as I recall was stone built but didn`t
have enough time to look properly and didn`t have access to a street
directory. As I say, just a long shot!!
Regards,
Keith.
I am looking for some additional information on my Jones-Williams-Evans connections. What follows is the result of a family member's research to date .. some pieces are missing (like parish) .. and I would also be interested in finding any collateral relatives .. from either the Jones or Williams sides of my family. And I also hope to continue the effort 'backward" in time !!
Here are the particulars as I know them of my Jones-Evans-Williams ancestors.
My great-grandfather:
Morris E Jones was born December 29, 1828 in TyMawr, Caernarvon County ..son of John Morris and Alice Evans Jones
My great-grandmother:
Margaret Williams was born August 15, 1832 in (Brinderwog*), Caernavon County .. daughter of David and Phebe (Phoebe?) Jones Williams
My grandfather:
John Morris Jones was born January 8, 1861 in TyMawr Penmorfa, Caernavon County
his birth certificate lists Registration District of Festiniog . sub district of Tremedoc . County of Caernarvon. Thomas Jones as registrar
Marriage Certificate for Morris Jones and Margaret Williams lists his rank/profession as a farmer.. residence at time of marriage Tymawr
Penmorfa
fathers name John Morris and father rank/profession as farmer
For Margaret ..rank/profession .. Domestic servant/cook
residence at time of marriage: Aberdunant
Llanfihangelyp-y-pennant
Father.. David Williams
rank/profession: Agricultural laborer
Margaret and Morris were married in Garth Chapel with Evan Griffith and Ann Williams as witnesses and Thomas Jones as registrar.
We have a very old newspaper article on Morris Jones (from Champaign County, Illinois paper) saying that both Morris' parents were natives of Caernavon County Wales. Morris farmed (as did his father) until he was 16 years old ..then worked in slate mines for five years. in 1851 he left for the States. . He worked in Slate quarries in Vermont and New York before going to Illinois where he bought and sold a quarry .. returned to Wales to farm (believe his father had died) .. met and married Margaret Williams. After a total of nine years back in Wales .. He and his family moved back to States .. buying farmland in Champaign County, Illinois.
So that is all I know at this time .. I don't know if any of the data on the marriage certificate would provide a clue to cottage or farm names or not .so I am sending it on to you. *I received an email from the editor of the Welsh gazetteer in response to my query on Brinderwog .. He says "I suspect that this place name was written down by an English speaker. It may actually have been spelt rather differently even then and maybe more so now. I can't see an obvious match in Caernarfonshire for this place.
"Brin" may appear as "Bryn" - the Welsh spelling (it means a hill)
but "erwog" looks very un-Welsh. the "er" may be an English transcription of "yr" so you may be looking for somewhere called
Bryn-yr-??? or Brynyr???
The most obvious match is Bryn-yr-ogof, but that is in Denbighshire (next door to Caernarfonshire) !"
This is a "tall order' but if anyone has any information or recommendations on the next steps I would certainly appreciate receiving it. I have ordered Census from the LDS here in the States and hope to have a chance to review it before I heard for Northern Wales in mid-June 2002 !!
According to the Dictionary of Welsh Biography Eben Fardd died in 1863 and is
buried in Clynnog. Hopefully I will find his grave and take photos.
anyone have any old postcards of Caldy, Wirral, for a book at all? or old
photos?
I posted this to the Glamorgan List last month
There is an old chapel in Criccieth which is now being used as a second hand books and old postcards centre. I spoke to the proprietor yesterday and he told me he has a stock of at least 50,000 old postcards covering most of the UK. He does quite a lot of business by email and exports all over the World.
He would be happy to let you know what he has in the area you are interested in and also prices.
His address is alunturner(a)capelmawr.idps.co.uk .
I do not get a cut !
Hi, everyone:
Can anyone suggest how I can find out where someone was living in 1795? Specifically, Thomas and Dorothy Roberts had a son, William, baptised in July of 1795 - according to the Llanrhos Parish Register
Transcriptions of Baptisms from 1668 to 1837. Are there land records, tax records, etc.? I've not delved into anything like this yet, so need help. Any guidance will be appreciated! Thanks.
Dear list,
Does anyone know anything about Eben Fardd (Ebenezer Thomas, Llanarmon), a
Lleyn poet of the last century? I know from a copy of a letter in the NLW
that he was an associate of Josiah Gibson, Caernarfon (cf my previous
posting), and of a John Goodman.
Any info or references will be gratefully received.
Yours sincerely,
Ian
Dear list,
I wonder if anyone has access to the 1851 and 1861 censuses for Caernarfon?
I can offer lookups in Brighton in return.
I am interested in the whereabouts of a Josiah Gibson of Caernarfon as I
believe he may have been the brother of my gtx4 grandmother Jane Goodman nee
Gibson (bapt ca 1783). He should be around in 1851 and possibly 1861.
Thank you in anticipation from someone for whom geography and work make
research difficult sometimes.
