Subject: RE: [GWYNEDD] A Mystery in Gwynedd
Hello David,
There are several references to PETERS families in Beaumaris and Amlwch:
a) Beaumaris churchyard, MI, William Peters, plumber and glazier, d. 4
March
1746/7 aged 59.
b) do. interior, brass to Wm. Peters 1746/7.
c) Peters, 'papist' [and master of a barque?] arrested at Beaumaris,
1647,
(Civil War).
This may be nothing to do with the local Peters families - but you never
know.
d) William Peters, plumber, paid for work on roof of Bangor Cathedral,
1744
and 1747.
e) 'Hopewell' of Amlwch, 16 tons, William PETTERS (sic) master, brought 2
casks of wine, tobacco, 20 fir planks and molasses from Liverpool, 1729.
f) Llandegfan churchyard, MI, Ann PETERS, d.23 April 1823, aged 91, wife
of
John RODGERS.
Although, the name Peters is not as common as say, Jones or Williams, it
is
not that rare in North Wales, so it doesn't always follow that the
various
families are inter-related.
Nadolig llawen - Happy Christmas.

Subject: [GWYNEDD] A Mystery in Gwynedd
Dear Listers
I'm new to this list having spent the past 3 years researching with great
success in Montgomeryshire. Now I find I have growing Gwynedd interests
and
gaps in my Welsh family history and I hope that I may find somebody with
a
common family interest.
For several years my kinsman and I have been searching for an ancestor of
ours who, to date, refuses to be found!
William PETERS our 4X Great Grandfather died 24 Jan 1823 at Bryneinin, a
farm near Darowen, Montgomeryshire where he and his wife had lived and
farmed since about the 1760s. His wife, Anne HARTLEY who was baptised at
Dolgellau on 15 July 1738 also died at Darowen on 4 Feb 1828. So far we
have
been unable to find their marriage. We know that all of their children
were
baptised at Darowen parish church; the first in 1768, but their marriage
cannot be found there. Study of a marriage index for Montgomeryshire
hasn't
revealed the marriage either. Is there such an index for the old counties
within Gwynedd?
Of even greater mystery is the birthplace or baptism place of William
PETERS. We have searched Montgomeryshire thoroughly without success. I
wonder is anyone else researching the Peters family in Gwynedd or does
anyone have any information that might lead to finding from whence they
came?
The only possible clue we have is that we know that there were Peters in
coastal shipping trade ref. being a book called "The Amity of
Aberdovey".
According to this they traded in both Towyn and Aberdovey, Merioneth,
Amlwch
and Beaumaris, Anglesey though whether the same family is not known for
certain. J E Griffiths Pedigrees at page 63 shows a Peters family in
these
areas and there is even a William who might be ours. However, there are
no
dates that we know in either this reference or from William's baptism
that
would assist with the connection.
Even if nobody has knowledge of the family I would appreciate ideas on
where
to find help.
Does anyone have suggestions?
Kind regards and season's greetings to all.

Dear list,
There is a good marriage index for the northern counties of Wls and Salop in
Dafydd Hayes marriage index c/o Clwyd FHS. There is a fee of 5 pounds for
each search of up to 50 surnames / couples but it has proved invaluable to
me over the years. As it is a fee paying service I should be at pains to
point out that I have no connection whatever with it but have found it very
useful. It must be especially considered in this case where a blanket
search for a relatively uncommon surname is called for.
One of the Peters mentioned in Griffiths is the mother of a Mary Goodman who
d ca 1818 in Llanidan, Agy. I don't know how these Goodmans exactly fit in
with my Goodmans (if at all) and so I haven't looked into this at all but I
feel there is a connection with William Williams of Ty Newydd, Llanfihangel
who d in the second half of the 18th century after working in the East India
Company. J E Griffiths may shed more light on that connection.
Good luck anyway.
Yours sincerely,
Ian Thompson

Dear Betty,
On checking my outstanding emails I notice that I intended answering your
query of 13 December.
You are quite correct in suggesting that cholera comes in epidemics. There
was a great fear of typhoid, smallpox and cholera throughout the UK in the
1840s - partially caused by insanitary and overcrowded housing and disease
spread by better road links and the growing railway network.
Cholera broke out in Amlwch in September 1849, and within a short time, 22
people died, all in the Amlwch Port area, and with hardly any medical
treatment. By October 1849, the epidemic had reached Holyhead, where 42
died.
That's all I can find from my reference books, but perhaps someone living in
the Amlwch area could give you more details. There is probably a lot in the
local newspapers, but that can be a time-consuming exercise.
Nadolig llawen i pawb - Happy Christmas to everyone on the Gwynedd List.
David Price, Bangor.

Does anyone know of a cholera epidemic in 1849. The tombstone of my
Ellen Paynter Hughes says that died in that year of cholera. Cholera is
generally something that comes in epidemics rather than just to
individuals because it is caused by contaminated water (I think). I
wonder if anyone else has run into this disease in the period? The
Hughes in question are:
John Hughes I (1758-1845) m. 1788 (Capt.-Brig Agnes)
+Ellen Paynter (1776-1849) - b. Amlwch
She died in Amlwch,Anglesey, but epidemics generally don't restrict
themselves to one locality.

I can't find the marriage of Anne Hartley and Mr Peters in the Dolgellau
Marriage index, there are however three other Hartley girls mentioned. As
Hartley is a very uncommon name in Dolgellau, I would suspect that they are
probably sisters
Eleanor Hartley m Ellis Jones 13th Oct 1769
Elizabeth Hartley m Owen Meredith 4th Jan 1764
Jzabella Hartley m Vincent Humphreys 30th Apr 1757
All three marriages were by licence. If obtaining marriage licences rather
than reading Banns was seen as the one thing by the Hartley clan, I would
suggest having a look in the Isysweb catalogue of marriage licences on the
National library website:
http://www.llgc.org.uk:81/index.htm
(NB you have to select from the option Dewisiwch gronfa/Select a database:
the option Archives: marriage bonds to access the catalogue)
There is also a short reference to Thomas Hartley an Ensign in the Cader
Idris Volunteers on my web site here:

This site has not yet been "officially launched" and is still very much in
the testing and changing and adapting phase. If you try accessing it at the
moment it is very much "pot luck" what will be up and running and what might
be down and unavailable.
When the site is properly on-line it will, no doubt, be a very valuable
resource As soon as it is fully functional it will be announced on this and
other Rootsweb lists.
Nobody can stop those who have got the URL from premature announcements on
various lists from trying their luck with the site, but, I am told that
Leicester University would prefer that the URL was not widely spread until
the official launch as too many people trying to access the site is causing
problems for the developers. Problems for the developers will, inevitably
lead to a delay in the official launch. Be glad that such a valuable resource
will soon be available - but please be patient whilst waiting for it to
become fully functional :-)
