Hello
Am researching the JENKINS family and wondered if anyone knows anything about
Hugh JENKINS b. 1888 Mongomery Newtown. He married and lived at Rhosneigr. Had at least 2 children, one of whom was Iolo JENKINS who I believe emigrated to New Zealand around 1960. Any connections?
thanks Wendy
Hello listers
please has anyone out there access to the 1871 census for Bala. If so I would be really grateful for a lookup for John JENKINS aged 24 and wife Margaret JENKINS aged 20, and baby daughter Catherine JENKINS. In 1869 John was living at High Street Bala according to his marriage certificate, but his first child, Catherine, was born in 1870 at Llanfor, Bala.
Please could you also look for his parents David JENKINS aged about 70 and wife Mary JENKINS aged about 65 who may also be living in High Street Bala.
Thanks very much for any help

Those that know of him also know that Mr Gruffudd has his faults too :-}
On a more serious note, the supposed North/South divide in Wales is a
fallacy, probably invented by the "divide & conquer brigade". My great
grandfather from Cilfynydd (Glamorgan) was "Taid South", his wife (from
Salop!) was "Nain South", whereas "Tada Traws" came from Trawsfynydd, which
is well into the North of Wales.
But then, I suppose that those of us from South Merioneth have the advantage
of being neither North nor South and being able to love and hate each faction
with equanimity
Regards
Alwyn
Hi Ev - (and everyone)
It helps tremendously with Welsh genealogy research if one can at least
recognize the months of the year, words like, "wife," "daughter," etc. that
are often inscribed on gravestones - even ones throughout the US, Canada and
elsewhere that the Welsh are found.
Heini's books are great. He's a friend so I'm biased, of course. (He's also
got a great talent for singing - and is a great teacher, to boot!) But
there are other great, dedicated Welsh language teachers out there too.
Remember, the dialecs in South and North Wales are different - and provide a
wonderful immediate clue to the beginner doing Welsh ancestry chasing.....
for instance, just knowing your grandmother or grandfather by the names of
"Nain" or "Taid" gives the researcher an immediate, obvious clue - - - it
means they are from North Wales.
Good luck with the ancestry work. Arizona has a Welsh Society. Go to:
www.rootsweb.com/~vtwags/ and then click (or double click) on the link on
the lower section of the home page that says "WhereAreThey...." . Its
amazing - and exciting - just how far throughout the world our ancestors
have traveled.... one even was an astronaut in our time!

Phoenix
Listers,
I have purchased a complete language course called 'Colloquial Welsh', by
Gareth King.
ISBN # 0-415-10785-7. I'm sure a local or larger bookstore could order it
for you.
Routledge or in America 29 West 35th Street
11 New Fetter Lane New York, NY 10001
London, EC4P 4EE
I have another set of tapes but I can't find them at the moment, as we have
just moved. They pronunce the word, repeat, have you say it and repeat it.
Hope this helps,
Arlene

Dear Listers,
Finding aides in learning the Welsh language seem difficult, at best, here
in
the US. Please advise on where I may obtain good tapes/CD's to help learn
Welsh. I have yet to find a book that explains the pronunciation of Welsh
words - they just list the Welsh words and the English equivalent. And, I
have yet to find any tapes/CD's that walk you through Welsh like other
languages. How maddening!
You help his most appreciated! :-)

On line translation facilities have a long way to go before they produce good
translations :-0
I would be interested in knowing the URL for the site that produced your
translation.
There are so many different types of facilities for people wanting to learn
Welsh available that it is difficult to know where to begin with suggestions.
Perhaps a good starting point might be with The Welsh Language Board's page
on courses
http://www.bwrdd-yr-iaith.org.uk/html/adults/index-e.html
The Welsh Language Board is the government sponsored organisation for
promoting Welsh - so they should be able to provide what you need
If you can't find anything that suit your needs on the page, use one of the
links to contact a board staff member who should be able to point you in the
right direction.
regards
Alwyn
Sheila,
You don't say where in the US you are located, but there ARE places closer
to you that you can get assistance. Check out the Welsh Language Institute
of North America, through their Website. You can track it down through your
favorite search engine. cymdeithasmadog.org
An "alumna" of one of their summer programs.

Dear Listers,
In my online search for Welsh language aides I came across a website where I
can have some text translated into Welsh. I have had this text translated in
hopes of persuading Welsh speakers to help me in my quest to find suitable
Welsh learning aides. If you are able to assist me I will be very grateful.
