Hi Ruth,
I've found the Monumental Inscription for the LAWRENCE family, they are all
buried in one grave in St.Mary's:-
" MARGARET daughter of HOWELL and JANE LAWRENCE died 18 Decenber 1811 aged
28 years. HOWELL LAWRENCE died 2 December 1816 aged 70 years. JANE his wife
died 17 August 1817 aged 71 years.
So perhaps it is JANE after all
Regards,
Mike

Hi Ruth,
There is a strong possibility that Jane Lawrence should in fact be Joan
Lawrence:-
John James married Joan Lawrence on 6th Nov 1816 at Briton Ferryt ( LPW -
married by license banns and a witness )
John James their son was baptised at St.Mary's Briton Ferry on 23 Mar 1817,
John was a Labourer at the time
Margaret James their daughter was baptised at St.Mary's on 2 Sept 1820, John
was a Farmer at the time
It seems strange that John in 1817 was a labourer but by 1820 was a farmer,
but a clue as to how he acheived this may be found in another baptsim at
St.Marys:-
Lawrence Joan ( Jennett ) Fathers forename Hoel a Farmer, Mother Jane 21
July 1786 9 days old.
The forename is a little unclear as Hoel is not a name I've come across, so
I thought it may be Noel as it is definately four letters long. On looking
at the burials it appears that somebody possibly semi-literate has written
the name Hoel instead of Howell, as in the burials at St.Marys there is the
following:-
Lawrence Jane widow of Howell 19 Aug 1817 - Briton Ferry 71 yrs
Lawrence Ann widow 23 Mar 1839 - Cwrt Sart 88 yrs
Lawrence Howell 4 Dec 1816 - Briton Ferry 69 yrs
Lawrence Howell 12 Mar 1782 - Cilybebill 1yr
Lawrence Jane 7 Aug 1849 - Ynysygerwyn Nr.Neath 68 yrs
Lawrence John 2 Mar 1823 - Briton Ferry 74 yrs
So it looks as if when Jane Lawrence who was already a widow died in 1817
Joan and John moved to the farm. You may find a will to prove this.
Joan James wife of John was buried 5 Aug 1821 aged 35 yrs
Couldn't find any information on William P. James where did yoy find the
name and how do you know that he may have been brought up by a Phillips or
Phelps ?

Mike

Annie:
Thank you so much for your kind offer.
Our family, beginning with my now-deceased grandmother, began searching in
1923 to learn the name of my ggg grandfather.
We think we have a lead since we discovered an old newspaper article.
Our unknown ancestor supposedly drowned while crossing a stream of water on
a horse. He supposedly had at least two boys (including my ancestor,
William P. JAMES) and a daughter named Margaret. Supposedly the young
children (one or more) were raised by a family named PHELPS or PHILLIPS.
We found a John JAMES who was buried in Briton Ferry in 1834 (and drowned
while crossing a river on a horse). His wife, Jane (Lawrence) JAMES, died
in 1821. That is the same year my ancestor, William P. JAMES, was born so
we are wondering if she died leaving 3 young children (John, Margaret, and
William P) to be raised by a family named PHELPS or PHILIPS.
Unfortunately, if the mother died shortly after the birth of my William P.
JAMES, in the stress of things, William P. JAMES was not christened (or at
least his name doesn't appear on the Glamorgan Baptism Index for Briton
Ferry).
I was hoping to find a Parish Chest, containing more records. Perhaps, for
example, it might give info on a family who agreed to raise the JAMES
children. Maybe the parish required their father, John JAMES, who was a
constable at the time of his death in 1834, to pay some monies for their
support.
Perhaps there are school records that might prove our William P. JAMES
attended school in Briton Ferry, or perhaps he had an apprenticeship.
Anyway, if you have an suggestions how one might find the existence of
William P. JAMES in the family (other than christening records), I'd sure
appreciate your suggestions.
He came to the USA about 1840 . . . just in time to miss the 1841 census.
Thanks again.

Thanks for that info. Well I have no idea whether or not Briton Ferry
ever
had one or where it would be now but I live in Briton Ferry and have never
heard of a Parish Chest before. If there is any thing I can help with in
the
Briton Ferry area, please feel free to ask and I will do what I can.
all the best

It's my understanding, and I am a newbie, that various parishes kept their
records in a large chest, :the parish chest".
