Happy New Year 2004 to all !
My great grandfather John DAVIES (Blacksmith) was born in
Briton Ferry in 1809, the son of Lewis DAVIES (Blacksmith)
and wife
Hannah. John moved to Southwark and married Mary Ann
Breeden there on12 April 1846.
Others in Lewis and Hannah's family at Briton Ferry were
Jennet (1799), Lewis-William (1801), Evan (1803), William
(1805), David (1807), Mary (1811) and Catherine (1815).
In the Briton Ferry 1841 Census the father Lewis(60),
son William(35) both Blacksmiths and daughter Catherine(20)
appeared, all born Glamorgan, plus two boys born in Ireland
(?William's sons) Peter(15) and Lewis(10) both shown as
Blacksmiths.
Only Census Address shown was Briton Ferry "North of the
turnpike road leading from Cardiff to Neath".
None of the family have been found in the 1851 Census apart
from a Peter Davies age 22 born in Ireland a soldier at
Longcross Barracks, Cardiff, who might be the one above
though the ages don't match.
An Evan DAVIES age 77 living at West Ham in 1881 (with HAY
and FLACK grandchildren in his household) may have been
John's brother.
Hannah died in Neath in 1832 age 63, and Lewis died there
in 1859 age 81, both buried at St Mary's Briton Ferry.
I should be glad to hear of any links to members of the
family, especially Lewis Sr and Hannah's marriage and births
which have not so far been traced.
Thank you, and good luck with your own searches.
Howard Davies
