Hi Jana,
This is an excerpt from "Briton Ferry Notes" by Cliff Morgan. An excerpt
of a Chapter entitled Memories:-
"Memories of Miss Hill ( Late of Brodeg House, Briton Ferry)
Conversation recorded Aug 1974:-
The "Hill Family" was a family of industrialist and business people.
Jenkin Hill had a grocers shop in Pill Terrace, Giant's Grave, as well
as being a shareholder in the early metal industries in Briton Ferry in
the 19th Century. His son William had a thriving grocers shop in
Villiers Street, and his grandson, Brynmor became a Director of the
Grovesend Steel Sheet & Galvanising Company, the owners of the Whitford
Works in Briton Ferry. Jenkin bought Brondeg House ( above the present
roundabout) in 1888, and it became the family residence. The house has
now been converted into a private nursing home." .
This is an excerpt from "Reminiscences of Briton Ferry and Baglan" by
E.Humphries first published 1898.
" Brondeg House
This picturesque residence is the abode of Mr. Jenkin Hill, provision
merchant, chairman of the Briton ferry School Board, member of the Urban
District Council, director of the Baglan bay Tinplate Works and the
Albion Steel Works, and ex-county Councillor. This residence for some
years was tenanted by the late Dr.Evans, and for many years by the late
Dr.Symes. It was purchased by the present occupier in 1888."
There are other references to the Hill family generally in the 1880s /
90s
There are two Jenkin Hill in the St.Marys Register as follows:-
Hill Jenkin David Bankman Jane 13
May 1847 Nr. Giant's Grave
Hill Jenkin Richard Bankman Susan 14 Apr
1850 Giant's Grave Briton Ferry
There is no sign of either these Hills having a William or Brynmor
baptised at St.Mary's
Susannah Hill was baptised in St.Mary's on 1 Aug 1831 many years before
either of the Jenkin Hill above were born
In the 1841 Census we have the following:-
N25 010 63 Giant's Grave
Hill John 60 Bankman
Hill Susan 45
Hill Elizabeth 15
Hill Susan 8
Hill John 4
This looks like them but the names have been abbreviated to Susan
The only Susannah are:-
M 26 053 096 Penydarren Yard
Hill John 40 Agent
Hill Sussanah 40
Hill James 25 Puddler
Hill Rowland 20 Puddler
Hill Ann 15
Hill Sussanah 12
Hill John 10
Hill Benjamin 5
Hill Joseph 5
Hill William 2
Hill Mary 1
The parents in this latter family are too young
Are you able to move your research of your Hill line forward 50 years or
so to see if there is any connection with Jenkin Hill. When next I go
through the 1901 Census for Briton Ferry I will see what Hills I can
unearth, from memory there were several there. Unfortunately it is not
indexed and many of the fiche are poorly written and captured.
I also have an EDWARDS I am researching from James Street Neath, the
Police Station to be precise.
Hope this is of some help.
Kind Regards,
Mike
