I am new to the Flintshire mailing list. In searching the archives for
2003 I came across some families in Flintshire that may connect to
individuals I am researching. Do you connect to any of these individuals
or have you come across them in your research on HUGHES or WILLIAMS
lines?
Japheth HUGHES married Maria WILLIAMS 3 December 1852 at the Independent
Church, Chester, Cheshire, England.
The marriage record indicates that Japheth HUGHES was 26 years old, a
bachelor, a joiner (carpenter), and residing on Weaver's Lane in Chester.
His father John HUGHES was a farmer. Later records indicate Japheth was
born February 1826 in Wales, possibly in Flintshire and both his parents
were born in Wales.
The marriage record shows that Maria WILLIAMS was 24 years old, a
spinster, and living on Queen Street in Chester. Her father Henry
WILLIAMS was a butcher. One of the witnesses to the marriage was an
Eliza WILLIAMS. Later records indicate Maria was born May 1829 in Wales,
possibly in Flintshire and both her parents were born in Wales.
A search of the 1851 census for Chester of every entry on the streets
named did not show Japheth, Maria, or their parents.
Japheth and Maria had a son Henry John HUGHES born 16 August 1853 at
Chester, Cheshire, England. They were living as Queen's Park (in St.
Bridget's Parish I think) when he was born and Japheth was listed as a
joiner.
Japheth, Maria, and their son left England and arrived at New York in the
United States 21 August 1854. Japheth was listed on the passenger list
as a carpenter. They settled in the state of Ohio.
Eight daughters were born to the family in Ohio. The family lived in
Columbus and in Brown Township, both in Franklin County, Ohio when 1860,
1870, and 1880 census records were compiled. Japheth was listed as
carpenter, joiner carpenter, and farmer on these records.
1. Eliza A. HUGHES (born about 1856, may have died by 1900
census)
2. Margaret HUGHES (born about 1858, may have died by 1900
census)
3. Amanda HUGHES (born about October 1859, may have died by 1900
census)
4. Settie or Lettie HUGHES (born about 1862, may have died by
1900 census)
5. Hannah HUGHES (born about 1863, may have died by 1900 census)
6. Jane P. (Jennie) HUGHES (born 16 March 1865, baptized 10
December 1865, First Presbyterian Church, Columbus, Ohio)
a. She first married widower John COCKLE in 1908 in
Nebraska and helped raise his young children. The marriage record
indicates she was from Omaha, Nebraska. (Jane's brother Henry had moved
to Omaha by this time it appears.) John Cockle died in 1921 in Texas.
b. She later married Lewis U. TRACY. By 1927 they were
living in California where he died in 1939 and she in 1954.
7. Mary Ellen HUGHES (baptized 14 June 1868 at First
Presbyterian Church, Columbus, Ohio then apparently died before 1880
census)
8. Nettie HUGHES (born about 1869, may have died by 1900 census)
Also with this HUGHES family on the 1870 census in Ohio were a Peter
WILLIAMS, age 41, laborer, born in Wales, his parents born in Wales and
an Eliza WILLIAMS, age 39, born in Wales, with both her parents born in
Wales.
Son Henry John HUGHES was married in 1879 to Viola Ellen Richards and
they were in Red Oak, Montgomery County, Iowa when 1880 census was taken.
Japheth HUGHES, his wife Maria, and their daughter Jane P. (Jennie) were
in Red Oak, Montgomery County, Iowa when the 1895 state census was taken.
No other individuals in the family were there at that time. These three
individuals were still in Red Oak when the 1900 census was taken.
Japheth was 74 and Maria was 71. I have not yet found when or where they
died.
Looking forward to hearing from others on the list, particularly those
who may connect to these families or have suggestions on finding parents
and siblings of Japheth and Maria.
