I have a great grandfather called Edward Jones, who declared on his marriage certificate
in 1863 that his father was Elias Jones, shoemaker. I had high hopes of finding Edward and
his father at Rhuddlan, but the burial register of Rhuddlan put paid to that, showing that
the Edward born there in 1830 died at the age of 4. The search is difficult because all my
mother's grandparents died before she was born and her mother was not communicative on
the subject.
There is no family lore about Edward, but the 1881 census for St. Marylebone gives his age
as 50 and his trade as shoemaker and simply says that he was born in Wales , no county
being mentioned. He was a soldier at the time of his marriage in 1863, but left the army
before the birth of my grandmother Jones in 1866. Another difficulty is that the number of
fathers called Elias Jones with sons called Edward is very small on the IGI. I hope that
what I have written may remind a member of this list of some earlier research. Thank you.
