I think I would say it was likely that if Elizabeth was old enough it would
be her illegitamte child and named Collins after the father. If you can get
the parish records checked for his christening ,it would probably say who
the mother was and who he was the illegitamate child of. I have a relative
who had an illegitamate child and it stated the mothers name and who the
father was in the entry for her christening.

I have an 1881 census entry in Yorkshire for one Tom Collins,
grandson
aged
6, born Downing Wales.
His grandmother was Mary Vester, aged 63
Other people living with Mary were her son John who was aged 26 and
married,
Thomas an unmarried son and Elizabeth an unmarried daughter
So who does young Tom Collins belong to?
I can't find a Vester/Collins marriage on the IGI.
Any ideas or help gratefully received.
