Subject: [FLN] Re PARRY/JONES in Flintshire
Dear Brian,
I have been on this list for quite a while, about two years now. When we
returned from our trip to the UK this May, I had been transcribing the
Holywell BTs from some of the LDS films in June and early July ( Holywell
Parish Church 1818-1830 completed for PARRY and a few JONES), but had to
stop to get some gardening and community work done. I'll get started
again
soon.
So far, this is the saga of trying to sort out my PARRY and JONES
connections in Flintshire.
At first, this appeared to be my family, with PARRY from Holywell and
JONES
from Whitford.
Bapt. date, Forename,Parents,Abode,Trade,Vicar
----------------------------------------------
Our first take was that these were my ancestors:
We found the marriage certificate of Edwin PARRY (20) and Elizabeth Ann
BURDIS (17) who married on June 17, 1872 in St. Mary's Church, Heworth,
Gateshead, Durham. Edwin's father was John, a smeter worker. The 1881
census of Gateshead gave Edwin's birthplace as North Wales [very helpful
(;>)] and Elizabeth's as Sunderland, Durham. This is definitely correct.
We then searched Holywell and Whitford records and found the following,
whom
we thought we the right ones:
PARRY
1 March,1822 - Mary, do Edward & Ellen PARRY, Brynford, Miner, J.Jones
27 May,1825 - John, so " , " , ",
2XGGF
JONES
31 July,1825 - Jemima,do Edward & Jane
JONES,Creccas,Farmer,E.Roberts2XGGM
10 Feb,1828 - Emma, do " , " ,
" , "
( Emma died at 8 mo. and was buried on Oct 11, 1828)
also found a burial for what appears to be another daughter
pg 127, no. 1029 - Anne JONES, Creccas, Nov 13, 1831, 9 mo., E.
Roberts,vic.
also found burial #1008 of Jane JONES, Creccas, May 24,1831, 38 years, by
Edward Roberts, vicar
I checked to 1837 in Whitford and could not find Edward JONES, widower
getting re-married.
Then we found a marriage for a John PARRY and Jemima(h) JONES in Whitford,
MARRIAGE of John PARRY and and Jemima(h) JONES in Whitford
Have a copy of a Marriage Certificate for ' John Parry & Jemimah Jones'
dated 31st Jan 1846,
John Parry is listed as being a ' Bachelor',
also as a 'Labourer' from ' Holywell' - Father's name is 'John
Parry'-
Rank-
'Post Master' ( an skilled occupation in the mine) and
father John (not
Edward).
'Jemima(h) Jones' -' Spinster'- Place -' Gelli' - Father's
name is Edward
Jones'- 'Labourer' (at birth it is ' Creccas' & he is a
'Farmer').
After much research, I am now sure the following is the right John PARRY
for
this marriage, as he is the only John PARRY I found in Holywell born
to a
John PARRY in the right time frame and occupation:
7 Nov, 1823 - John so John and Mary PARRY, Bagillt, Collier, John JONES
vicar.
These first two baptisms appear to be to the correct John and Jemima for
my
ancestors, as when their son Edward married in 1872, he listed his
father
John as a smelter worker.
10th Oct 1847, Sarah, do John & Jemima JONES,
Bagillt,Smelter,E.L.Davies
9th Jan 1853 Edward " Castle Hill " J. Jones
(this appears to be my great grandfather. He married in Durham in 1872)
These are other children born to a John and Jemima PARRY in Tai Coed and
Greenfield. Having looked at the actual Parish Records, I found other
entries which had abode listed as Tai Coed, Greeenfield. So, I think this
is the John PARRY married to Jemimah JONES in the marriage certificate
which
I have and are not my relatives.
11th June 1854 Sarah John and Jemima JONES, Tai-Coed, Carter J.Jones
24th March 1857 John " Greenfield " M.Roberts
20th July 1859 Samuel " " Labourer "
26th Sept 1869 Robert " Tai-Coed Carter T.E.Jones
Now the burning questions are:
1) Where did my John and Jemima get married?
2) Where did they disappear to after Edward's birth, if my supposition is
correct that the baptisms after 1853 are for another family?
3) Do I now really have the right ones, as Edward certainly called
himself
EDWIN from age 20 until he died. He used Edward for his eldest
son's
middle
name and for his youngest son's first name. He was called
"Ted" by those
who
knew him well and was a champion bare-fisted boxer. There had been a
large
portrait of him in his boxing outfit and stance, which has since
disappeared.
3) Edwin had a sister Sally ( so Sarah is right) but he also had a sister
Martha and perhaps a brother Philip. I haven't found Martha or Philip
anywhere in Holywell or Whitford areas.
Can you help me with any of the PARRY/JONES information which you have to
unscramble these relationships? Any help will be most gratefully
received.
We were in Holywell and Whitford in May for about three days but it still
wasn't long enough. We were able to get access to Holywell Parish Church
through the Church Warden, Mr. Harrison. He gave us access to the books
which are in an ancient chest with a double locking system. You need two
people to open the lid, it is so heavy.
We couldn't get into the Church in Whitford, as the Church Warden did not
feel he had the authority to let anyone see the books without permission
from the vicar, and the vicar was out of town while we were there.
It was after these three days of looking into Parish Records and going to
the Records Office in Holywell that I found all of the information which
made me think that some of our initial assumptions were wrong.
I am afraid that I have been so frustrated with this branch of my mother's
family, that I have been spending a bit more time on my father's side of
the
family in Canada and Yorkshire, which has produced a much better
yield of
relevant facts and data. Now, having had some success there, I am ready to
get frustrated again (:>)
Looking forward to hearing from you or any other lister who may have some
links to this family.
