Dear Doris,
Thank you so much for the reference, however, I have already seen that one.
I was at the Worcester Factory and Museum this May and spoke with the
curator. I have since received copies of all of the information they have
on these two brothers, James and Thomas. Thanks for sending it on, however.
You never know when it could be something one hasn't seen. Another CLWYD
lister has also been very kind and generous with his time and advice,
resulting in finding the marriage of my William's parents and the baptism of
another one of his sisters. So every hint given is useful. Keep up the
good work Doris. I notice that you are always there willing to help out.
I now have every web site that has any reference to any CALLOWHILL name,
thanks to "google", "dogpile" and "copernic" search
engines.
The two artists mentioned on this website were brothers b. 1838 and 1840 in
Worcester, who emigrated to America at the height of their prominence in the
porcelain world about 1883. They were both also artists in oils and
watercolours. Several of their children continued in the field, with one
son, Sidney, being a very prominent ceramic artist of the Boston School of
Ceramics.
We believe James and Thomas are cousins of my grandfather, William
CALLOWHILL, who was a "colour maker" which is an important job within a
porcelain factory or a paint manufacturer. He uses the science of prisms to
determine the chemical makeup of various colours. He emigrated to Canada in
1857 and I have his complete family line since then, except for one son,
also named William, who seems to have disappeared after he was 28.
I have just uncovered a John CALLOWHILL who was a minister in Monmouth Wales
and had at least three children there. I will now be joining that mailing
list to see what I can find out about him and his link to my family. By
the time of the 1881 census of the UK, there were only three CALLOWHILL
families left in England. Today there are nine, and I will be contacting
all of them shortly to see where we link up.
A very big thank you to Dick Jones and Darran Gardner for your input on the
location of Capel Curig and the possible name of the hotel. I will follow
up to see what I may be able to find out there.
Kindest regards,
Anne Clark-Stewart
