My great-grandfather was named John S. BATEMAN middle name
supposedly Samuel. According to the U.S. Federal Census of 1910, he had been
living in the United States for 28 years. The Census gave his place of birth
as England. His death certificate gave Wales. He was 65 19 Oct. 1922 when he
died in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. Since he was 65 when he died, this meant,
he was born in 1857. His Tombstone Records list the year of birth as 1857.
Place Wales.
My father's family arrived in Pittsburgh PA in 1906, when my
grandfather Jacob L. BATEMAN Sr. was 12 years of age. My father also named
Jacob L. BATEMAN was born in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania 15 Feb 1926. He married
my mother Miriam OATES 25 Dec 1946 while he was stationed at Napier Field in
Headland, Alabama. I, Jacob L. BATEMAN III was born in Montgomery, Alabama
28 Oct. 1952.
I would like to know if my grandfather was born in Halkyn, Flintshire
Wales. His father had the given name of John. I found five John BATEMANS
listed on the 1861 census of England. Four were 4 years of age and living in
Bradford, Gainesborough, Hunslet, and Spilsby. One that was 0 years of age
was living in Spilsby. The others were all 4 years of age. Two John
BATEMANS lived in Spilsby. One was 4 and the other one 0 years of age on the
census. My great-grandfather was a Stationary Engineer. He was said to work
at a Steel Mill. He died in an industrial accident 19 Oct. 1922 at the age
of 65. He first appeared in Decatur Township, Clearfield County,
Pennsylvania 5 July 1884 when he married Laura Amelia Miller. They had 8
children Elizabeth Ann, Ida May, George , Jacob L., David A., Leona E.,
Stanley E. Uncle Stan was born in Pittsburgh in 1905. He and my uncle Dave
died in California. Dave in 1954 and Stan in 1976. I have no clue as to
where in Wales John S. BATEMAN was born. I know, now that since there are
BATEMANS in Halkyn, Flintshire I wanted to search there. Is there a written
History of the Family? I was wondering if these BATEMANS were related to
other more famous BATEMANS of England, like the Botanist.
Thank you
