Hello,
Wondering if anyone can help me with this mess! I have been looking for a
Thomas DEVENEY. I have found the following:
He married Elizabeth Kate Clinnick in 1885. I have the marriage cert. The
marriage certificate of Thomas and Elizabeth notes his occupation as RMLI
private and his father's name as Owen, a Dyer. He appears in no census
material with his family until 1901, where it says he is a Labourer. Before
that I believe he was a marine. This would account for his absence and is
in line with family lore.
I have this from the 1881 Census:
Institution: "Royal Naval Hospital" East Stonehouse Plymouth
Census Place: East Stonehouse, Devon, England
Thos. DEVENEY U 24 M Mold, Wales
Rel: Patient
Occ: Private R Marines
(this is just 0.5 of a mile from where his wife to be Elizabeth Clinnick
lived). Then this from 1891:
RG12/1836/122/3
HMS Ganges, Training Ship, Plymouth - moored in Falmouth Harbour,
Cornwall
Thomas DEVNEY, Member of Crew, Single, 33, Private RMLI, Flintshire Mold
I have a Thomas Deveney in the 1901 Census (spelt Devenay), the right age
but born in Manchester! I know the 1901 Deveney family is mine.
I have found a marriage entry for Owen Devnay and Bridge Dawes in 1852 in
Mold.
Now, to me... this all points to this Thomas being my Thomas..However, the
Manchester birth place in the 1901 throws me.
Today I received Thomas DEVENEY's birth certificate which has his father
listed as Owen, General Labourer, and mother as Bridget DAYS (not Dawes as
in the marriage I found in Mold). Thomas was born 6th January 1859, Prince's
Yard, Mold.
I checked out other Thomas Deveney's born around the same date, but they are
all married to someone other than E.K. Clinnick.
I would love to claim the Flintshire Thomas but all the evidence is
circumstantial. Any suggestions???
