Dear Veronica,
Your e-mail is very interesting because it seems similar to research
that I was doing for a friend of mine whose father and grandmother was
brought up in North Wales. There was adoption within the family which
made it quite hard to trace as it was before the time of the adoption
records held in the Family Record Centre (I think 1927 or 1929 can't
remember at the moment). Our break through came when I obtained the
grandmothers marriage certificate and on it they put her birth name now
known as .. And then the name she used and was known as. It has not been
possible to find any formal adoption records but we were able to
establish she lived with 2 ladies by the name of Greenhalgh in North
Wales and that was the name she took. When I had found her birth name,
then I was able to find her birth records in the Family Record Centre or
of course you can search on line in 1837online. The other thing I did
was to go to the probate office in London and searched for a will. Both
our ladies had wills which gave useful names and addresses they had
moved to. I have to say it took a long time - over a year. I also was
able to find a Lancashire connection along the way; joined their site
too and bothered anyone who came up with the Greenhalgh surname! That
way I discovered the 2 ladies original family and that they were known
for fostering/adopting children.
Actually I had a very few credits left for 1837 online and did out of
curiosity look up Thorley. There is a birth registered for an Ellen
Thorley in the 1889 quarter of July, Aug and Sept in Manchester ref 8d
238!
Hope this helps
Regards Sue

Subject: [FLN] Childrens Home - Holywell
Greetting to everyone on this list. I am new to this list. I am
searching
for my grandmother Ellen/Helen Thorley Born 1889 Area according to
oral
tradition is Manchester/Cheshire
Although I am able to research other aspects of my family history my
grandmother is proving elusive in the extreme.
Oral traditon has it that she was bought up in a childrens home in
Holywell
Wales. Apart from that all I know is that she married Patrick John
Connors at
St Georges Cathedreal Southwark London in 1916 and her father was a
farmer
named William Thorley
Could anyone tell me what orphanages/childrens homes were in this area
from
1889 to 1916 ? She is not listed on the Free BMD's or in the Birth
Marriage
and Death Records in London
Your help would be appreciated
