On one of the lists I am on the idea was introduced that everyone should send
in details of their great-grandparents, wherever they were from, in an
exercise to see if anyone connected. It seems to be working very well, so I
thought it might be an idea on this list. Just in case everyone else agrees,
here are mine and my husband's -
MINE
Albert Edward BURKETT born abt. 1869 probably in Birkenhead, but possibly
Shoreditch, son of George BURKETT, commercial traveller, married Ellen HUGHES
in Birkenhead in 1890, then my great-grandmother, Catherine Alice WATSON in
Birkenhead in 1899. Catherine was the daughter of Joseph Boden WATSON and
Sarah Jane SMITH.
William Thomas HOWARD, born 1880 in Liverpool, married Ada SMITH, daughter of
William SMITH, in Toxteth Park in Sept. 1900.
William Thomas was the son of (a real brick wall) Thomas D'Walden HOWARD
(master mariner), son of William (merchant), and Mary Grace HUGHES, born abt.
1847 in Caernarvon, who married in Liverpool in 1870. Mary Grace was the
daughter of Thomas HUGHES (painter) and Grace ?
John HUGHES, son of Thomas HUGHES and Ruth ANKERS, born 1863 in Leeswood,
Mold, and his wife Mary Jane DAVIES, daughter of Joseph DAVIES and Ann? all
from Leeswood, Mold.
The last of my great-grandparents are a bit impossible. My great-grandmother
I know about, she was Eveline GILLAM, and her parents were Noah GILLAM and
Hannah HADFIELD. She was born in Ulverston on 31st Dec. 1884. My
great-grandfather, however, is a mystery. No one knew who he was, but his
name is on my grandfather's birth certificate. His name was Richard RIDGE,
and that is all I know about him. They were not married, so I can't trace him
through marriage certs.
MY HUSBAND
Thomas Stocker McCLELLAND, born 1877ish in Liverpool, son of Samuel McGill
McCLELLAND and Margaret HEYES. His wife was Sarah Jane MORLAND, born Dec.
1873 in Liverpool, daughter of Thomas MORLAND and Sarah WINDSOR.
William Ephraim PALING born 1874 in Cookham, Berkshire, son of Joseph PALING
(born 1852 in Nottingham) and Emma SAYLE (born 1850 in Fordham, Norfolk). His
wife was Isabella HARRIS, born 1873 in Walworth, Surrey, daughter of James
Josiah HARRIS and Elizabeth ANDREWS.
Another of my brick walls - William CHADWICK, journeyman butcher, born abt.
1842 in Oldham, son of Joseph CHADWICK. His wife was Mary DEWHURST, born abt.
1845 in Liverpool, daughter of John DEWHURST, stonemason.
Thomas Knowles AVERY, born 1853 in Liverpool, son of Thomas Stockdale AVERY
and Agnes KNOWLES. His wife (another headbanger) was Isabella DICKINSON, born
abt. 1856 supposedly in Liverpool (can't find her, so have my doubts),
daughter of William DICKINSON and Johanna ? (she was from Wexford, Ireland).
I think that is it.
