Hi List,
I was hoping that someone maybe able to tell me if it is possible to find
out which vessels and, more importantly, seamen docked in Connah's Quay,
North Wales between 1900-1940?
I remember as a child walking along the docks with my Nana in the early
1980s, and sometimes we would sit in the Captain's Hut if it had been left
unlocked to watch the fishermen on the River Dee. She never spoke about her
childhood, except to say her father was a Ships Captain. Since my Nana's
death last year I have found out that in 1936 she was put in the Seamen's
Ophanage in Liverpool by her father after her mother died at an early age.
Her father was Capt Hugh Conway Campbell. He died at sea on 15th March 1942
when his ship, SS Miriam Thomas, was in collision with Hospital Ship 4: The
Vasna just south of the Isle of Man. The Miriam Thomas was not recorded as
lost until two days later when it didn't arrive in Belfast as planned after
sailing from Liverpool.
As a family we wonder whether my Nana visited Connah's Quay when she was a
child with her father. She seemed to love being at the docks but didn't
explain why. It would be great for us to find out whether her father had
been to Connah's Quay during his career.
Also is the Captains Hut still open? I remember, vaguely, old photos on the
wall of seamen, is my memory correct?
Many thanks,
Jonathan
