Hi Listers,
I wonder if anyone can through any light on the birth of
my missing Grandfather - EDWARD HODGKISS. I believe he was
born 3rd April,1869 in Ruabon, Denbighshire. I have tried to get his
birth certificate to no avail. I don't know if it's the spelling, date, or
what! I'm at a loss. The family originate in Shropshire and I believe
were miners. Any help would be most appreciated.
Thank you,
Collin Hill
Hi Collin
You didn't say from where you have tried to get his birth
certificate. The best place to request a search would be in the local
registers at the local registration office for Wrexham. How sure are
you that he was born near Wrexham?
The reasons for the non-retrieval of a birth record are:
non-registration of the birth; corruption of the name by the local
registrar; loss, corruption or mis-indexing of the name at the GRO,
Southport; loss or mis-transcription if the GRO birth indexes
subsequently appeared in typed or printed form.
With a surname like this there is always the possibility that it will
be corrupted at some stage. Here are some similar surnames which have
appeared in the GRO Indexes over the years. No doubt that a
considerable number of these are corruptions of the original name.
Hochkiss, Hodchkiss, Hodgekiss, Hodgkiess, Hodgkigs, Hodgkis,
Hodgkish, Hodgkiss, Hodgskiff, Hodgskiss, Hodkish, Hodkiss, Hodskis,
Hodskiss, Hoghkiss, Hogkiss, Holtchkiss, Hopkis, Hopkiss, Hoski,
Hoskis, Hoskiss, Hoskith, Hostkiss, Hotchkies, Hotchkis, Hotchkiss,
Hotckiss, Hotckkiss, Hotkiss, Hotskiss.
If the local registrar fails to find a match for one of the above
variants then it must be concluded that his birth wasn't registered.
