Hello everyone
I am new subscriber, and hope perhaps somebody can help me. I
am a high school student in Canada, so will not be hopping on a plane to
Wales any time soon! I'm asking a lot in this email, which I don't
usually like to do, so please don't think I'm quite THIS demanding all
the time! I am interested in the surnames of Jones and Morris in the
Chirk, Denbigh and St. Martins, Shropshire area. My great grandfather
was Charles JONES, b. 1877 Chirk. He was the son of William Jones and
Catherine PRESTON (of Liverpool). William was born about 1843 in
Chirk. However, family lore tells that he was originally born William
MORRIS, his father died and his mother remarried. While I have nothing
to back this up or disprove it, on his marriage certificate the father
is listed as Peter Jones. I was wondering if there was an 1851 census
index for either Chirk or St. Martins, Shropshire? If so, could someone
look for William Morris or Jones, aged about 8. He may have a sister
Elizabeth or Betsy. If he is listed as Jones, the father is Peter.
Also, is there someone in Chirk who could take a picture of the grave of
William and Catherine Jones? I have a photocopy of a picture taken in
the early 1970s and it is not very clear. The grave is a cross on three
tiers. I believe the cross says, "In Memory Of" and the tiers say
"Catherine, wife of William Jones" "______Road, Chirk, died June 20 1924
aged 78? years" I believe William is also buried there but perhaps is
listed on another side?
My last request - is there a business directory of Chirk from between
1877 and 1881 or 1881 and 1891? The family moved a lot between
Liverpool and Chirk. I know the family was there in 1877, but in
Liverpool in 1881. They had returned by 1891. If so, could someone
look for William Jones, tailor?
Thanks a lot. I live in Canada and if you think I could help you with
any Canadian research, please let me know. I also have the 1881 British
Census and the BVRI, ed. 1.
Best Wishes
