I am trying to solve a 20 year old puzzle about by great grandfather Robert Jones'
family.
Robert Jones was born around 1867 in the parish of Llanrhaiadr Ym Mochnant, Denbighshire
and died on Christmas Day, 1944, at St Martins, Shropshire at the home of his daughter
Margaret, though he lived at the time at Bronygarth near Chirk. He was a chapel man.
The only other record I have for him is the 1901 census where he is living at Green
Cottage, Llangedwyn, Denbighshire and is employed as a 'carter on estate',
presumably the Bryngwalia estate. His wife is listed in the census as Jane, though family
tradition has her as Mary, and a daughter was Mary Jane, so the mother may have been Mary
Jane as well.
The children were Sarah, William Evan (aka Bill, who was later to become a councillor in
Wrexham before moving to Essex), Margaret, John (killed serving with the Royal Welch
Fusiliers at Mametz Wood during the Battle of the Somme in 1916), Mary Jane (aka
'Polly', who married George Davies and lived at Chirk Green).
The 1901 census details are
Robert Jones (33), Jane (30), Sarah (11), William Evan (9), John (7), Margaret (4), Mary
Jane (2) (all are listed as being born in Llanrhaiadr, Denbighshire)
It is believed that Robert Jones was also at one time a bailiff at the Hand Hotel farm in
Chirk, though I have no independent confirmation of this. He is also said to have worked
on building a canal in Cheshire/Lancashire, but once again this is unconfirmed.
Any leads or solutions would be gratefully accepted
