John,
I found out that Jones is a very common Welsh name when I was looking for the
family in the US census. I thought by putting in Wales in the birthplace
marker, I would cut down the results. I'm sure I did but I was surprised at
how many were listed. I only found him on the 1910 census. He was married
in 1901 and died around 1914. His daughter knew very little about him. I
was not successful in locating him in the passenger lists of Ellis Island.
His two sons were Thomas R. (oldest) and Edward. The daughter was Marion.
Since the oldest was Thomas and neither son was named Robert, I thought maybe
Robert's father was Thomas.
I understand what you mean when you write about people not actually from the
town but maybe from outlying villages. My father would tell people he was
from Castlebar, Mayo Ireland but was actually from a rural area north of
Castlebar. The postal area was Castlebar.
Thanks for your information on Denbigh.
Nora
Nora,
Jones is a very common name, so is Robert and Llewelyn is a very Welsh
name.
In the 1881 census there are no Robert Llewelyn Joneses in the county of
Denbigh. There are two Robert L. Jones in the county born 1869 +/-5yrs and
there are >200 Robert Joneses in the same period. If you are thinking
specifically about Denbigh town then the search can be narrowed but there
is
also the administrative area of Denbigh town to consider. When talking
about
their origins someone might say they are from Denbigh but they may have
come
from one of the outlying villages near to the town. Neither of the Robert
L.
Joneses are from the Denbigh town district but several Robert Joneses are
from the district.
If you could find other information, such as emigration date, marriage
record, US census details etc.. it may provide the vital clues.
Regards,
John Pritchard
