Trying again to send this because everything to do with this list was
bouncing back yesterday.

Although I live in the parish of Ffestiniog, I was puzzled by
Tynffordd
fawr
and have been making enquiries. It turns out I was misled by the
name,
which
means house on the main road. I'd thought of present day main
roads with
houses alongside, and I'd thought of roads which might have been so called
before the quarries came. It turns out I should have gone further back (a
couple of centuries at least) for this particular road to have been so
considered! Also it's in a part of the parish easy to overlook, over the
river from Maentwrog.
If you take the A496 out of Blaenau Ffestiniog (say from the roundabout at
the foot of the Crimea), carry on down until you come to Rhydsarn on the
flat. You'll soon come to a dangerous T junction (Talybont). A few yards
before this junction a minor road veers down to the right towards the
river
Dwyryd and crosses the river at Pont Dolymoch. Take this road, pass
the
entrance to Plas Dolymoch, Fferm Dolymoch, Glanrafon and one other
property,
I think, then you will come to Tynffordd fawr and then Bronturnor
before
the
road rejoins the main road (A487) near the Oakeley Arms. Apparently
there
also used to be a pool on the river known by fishermen etc as Tynffordd
fawr.
I've tried finding it on
http://www.old-maps.co.uk/ but can't for the life
of me see it and the name is not shown on the 2.5 inch fairly modern map
nor
the slightly later Outdoor Leisure map of the same scale. Since I
haven't
been along this road for several years, I can't quite remember the layout
to
tell you where exactly to look - it would probably be easier to go
from
the
Oakeley Arms except that wouldn't be the direction I'd be
coming from to
explain it.
I hope this helps a bit.
