Hello Pat, Rhian.Lnda,and Alwyn,
Thanks for all your advice. I have traced the family on the 1891 and 1901
census. In 1891 they were living at 72 Manod Rd Festiniog . Two other
children Robert W.age21 and Anne E.12.are recorded.
Both of these were not shown on the 1881 census of Robert and Ellen. I think
I have found them . Robert age 11 grandson with Ellen Williams age 74 1
Bridges Tower Denbigh and Anne age2 grand daur with Lewis Williams 65 .3
Glasfor Terrce LLanaber Merioneth. If I am thinking correctly then some
domestic problem sent both children to their grandparents during the census
1881 period. This means that Ellens maiden name was also Williams!!!!. I am
open to suggestions where to go from here.Charles

You have two problems with finding these people in 1871. Firstly
their
place
of birth is only given as Flintshire and Merionethshire in 1881,
rather
than
a parish name, a parish name would make it easier to spot them in
earlier
census returns. Secondly as the eldest child is only 9 years old, the
couple
may not have been married at the time of the 1871 census. The only
Robert
Williams born in Flintshire and living in Ffestiniog in 1871 is a 27 year
old man married to Jane Williams.
You might find a more detailed place of birth by trying to find the family
on the 1891 and 1901 census returns first.
The best way to proceed would be to get a birth certificate for one of the
children, this would give the wife's maiden name. Armed with the wife's
maiden name you may be able to find a marriage certificate for the couple
which will give their fathers' names (as long as neither was
illegitimate).
Having the fathers' names might make it easier for you to find
the
individuals in their parents' homes in earlier census returns.
All the best
Alwyn
