I am not from Wales, but from Canada. The Charles Martin about whom I know a little (only
of his early life) is an ancestor of mine. He was my grandfather's uncle. I know that
he was born in the period 1846 to 1848. I know that he was baptised in 1848. He grew up
mostly in Wales, from which he left in 1872 to emigrate to the U.S. I don't have any
info about the U.S. port at which he arrived. He had brothers, but none of them left
Wales. I have no photos -- since, after all, his family lost touch with him in 1872. He
thought of himself as Welsh because he lived there for the period of 1854/55 (when he was
6 or 7) to 1872 (when he was in his mid-20s). He was a coal miner throughout his youth. I
know that he was born in Shepton Mallet, Somerset, England, from which both his parents
originally hailed. Whether he is the same Charles Martin (the immigrant from Wales) who
lived in Boone County, Iowa between the 1870s and 1921, and married Hannah Marie Batt in
1875, I cannot say.
