Hello Listers,
I am new to this list and the subject might be a little "off
topic" for which I apologise but I hope you will forgive me for this
transgression.
I live in Melbourne, Australia and last week I bought an old
sideboard and in the process of cleaning and polishing it I discovered
a postcard trapped behind part of the structure of the drawer slides. The
postcard is of "West End from Battery, Morecambe" and it is addressed to
Miss Winifred Owen, c/o Bryn-y-Pys, Overton, Wrexham, N.W. The senders are
Maira and J Reid. (as spelled). The card was posted in Morecambe on June
18th 19??.
I have, naturally, been busy 'googling' to find out as much as I
can about the people and the place. I learned that the owner of
Bryn-y-Pys died in 1950 and the majority of the buildings were demolished in
1956. Of the people I discovered nothing.
The postcard itself does give some clues as to when it was sent
to Winifred, who I presume was in service at Bryn-y-Pys. All the buildings
still have their iron railings which implies a pre-1941 photograph. The
stamp is George VI and the last two numbers of the year are 3, 5, 6, 8, 9 or
0.
This limits the date to either 1938 or 1939. Part of the written message on
the card reads ".... but it is a very nice day today Sunday.....". The 18th
of June 1939 was a Sunday.
The scene includes on the extreme left the Astoria Cinema. The
road traffic consists of three double decker buses (one reg# TF 7465), six
cars, one horse drawn buggy and a delivery boy on a bicycle.
I have searched for a B, M or D for Winifred in the locality
without success (did find the record of marriage of my eldest brother to
Marjorie Davies in 1943 at St. John's, Rhosllannerchrgog though). :-))
Can SKS please tell me what Bryn-y-Pys was used for during WWII and
anything at all about Miss Winifred OWEN and/or her friends Maira and J.
REID?
best wishes, Mike Buxton, OZ.
