Hi Helen,
I knew you would come up with something in the local paper! Which one did you find it in?
The report is a bit confusing though! It refers to a "Chirk Woman" but the
village of St. Martin's, where they appear to have been living at that time, is across
the border in Shropshire, England, (Moors Lane is at St Martin's Moor and runs
alongside the canal) but as the inquest was held in Chirk, by the East Denbighshire
coroner, the body must have been found in Wales. Also the death was registered as Wrexham
11b 325.
The Hughes family we've been looking at did seem to move around a bit; 1881 Coedpoeth;
1891 Pentre Broughton; 1901 Cefn Mawr! But, from the census entries, Thomas appears to
have been born in Llantysilio and Elizabeth at Froncysyllte. The eldest child I can find,
Owen Thomas Hughes, was born about 1875 in Froncysyllte, so I think you would be looking
for a marriage in Llangollen parish (which would be a Corwen registration) but I can only
see possibilities in the Wrexham registration district? Perhaps they married across the
river in Cefn?
There is also a possibility that Sidney Norman Powell was born in Newtown, Montgomeryshire
on 1893 Q1 (Newtown 11b 152)
Ian
