Earlier this month I posted a message about North Wales BMD and
Free BMD. The many replies about the difference between these two and
how to access them were MOST helpful.
But now I have a dilemma. With so many possibilities, how does a
person decide which certificate to order from the GRO using a credit
card? Is Llanrwst the correct registration district for someone who dies
in the Gwytherin Parish area? These three individuals are together on
the census records in 1841, 1851, and 1861, but I can find none of them
after that census.
1. Information received offline indicates that the wife, Jane HUGHES,
likely was the last of the three to be living. In 1863 Jane HUGHES of
Graig Bach was on the list of parish paupers, with relief reduced from 3
shillings to 2 shillings and six pence. She was shown with these ages on
the census records for Graig Bach farm, Gwytherin, Denbighshire, Wales:
1841--60, born in the county
1851--73, born Gwytherin
1861--83, born Llannfudd, Denbighshire
The BMD lists at least ten Jane HUGHES that died in Llanrwst
registration district between 1863 and 1871.
2. John HUGHES, the husband, was at Graig Bach farm, Gwytherin,
Denbighshire, Wales on census records with these ages:
1841--age 60, born in the county
1851--age 78, born Gwytherin
1861--age 89, born Gwytherin
On the BMD listings are three possible ones that could be him:
September 1861 quarter--Llanrwst--volume 11b page 247
December 1862 quarter--Llanrwst--volume 11b page 249
March 1862 quarter--Llanrwst--volume 11b page 319
At the present time, it is believed he was the son of John HUGHES
and Ann DAVIES and was baptized 15 September 1775 in Gwytherin Parish.
3. David HUGHES is believed to be the eldest son of this couple and was
baptized in 1805 at Llanrwst, Denbighshire. The youngest son was in the
United States before 1861. The eldest known daughter was living in Rhyl,
Flintshire with her husband and children. Have not yet found if the
other four known children were still living at this time. David HUGHES
is shown at Graig Bach farm, Gwytherin, Denbighshire, Wales on census as:
1841--age 35, born in the county
1851--age 43, born in Gwytherin
1861--age 60, born in Llanrwst, Denbighshire
The BMD lists just one David HUGHES that died before 1863, March
quarter 1861, volume 11b page 335. But it also lists two of that name
that died in Llanrwst registration district during 1863.
Do you have any suggestions of how to narrow down which
certificate to order when multiple possibilities exist?
