Hello,
Thanks for the very quick responses to my Ellen Evans 1871 census queries.
My 'brick wall' seems quite complicated (hoping to crack it one day
though!).
Ellen Evans is my great grandmother. I have found her on the 1901 census
since she had married by 1900 and was living in Llanasa. Her married name
was Rogers. According to the 1901 census she was born in Ruthin. I also
have a copy of her marriage certificate but unfortunately it doesn't say
where she was living at the time of her marriage. On the marriage
certificate it states that her father is David Ellis Evans. I can't find
any trace of him. A question I often ask myself is how does Ellen born
Ruthin, a reasonably sized market town some 25 miles away end up in Llanasa
a small village? I believe that she may have come to the area to work as a
domestic servant somewhere.
Ellen (aka Helen) died in 1955 aged 83 (according to her death certificate)
but aged 84 (according to the obituary in the paper).
I have found an entry for an Ellen Evans on 1881 Census living in the Ruthin
Workhouse, born circa 1971 (which would be about the right age). Also with
her in the workhouse is David Ellis Evans, aged 13. (I have wondered if the
David Ellis Evans named on her marriage certificate is actually her
brother).
I have no other information about Ellen Evans so am exploring all
possibilities at the moment.
Regards
Nicola Jones
