I think I've found him?
The censuses for 1871 to 1901 give Simon's place of birth as Llangollen, but his date
of birth varies from 1829 to 1834.
There are no baptisms at Llangollen, Ruabon or Chirk parishes for a Simon Thomas around
that period!
However, there is a baptism at Cefn Mawr Wesleyan Chapel for a Simon Thomas, born 27 Jun
1832, baptised 22 Jul 1832, s/o Robert Thomas & Mary Jones of Pontcysyllte.
The township of Cysyllte, in Llangollen parish, is at the southern end of Telford's
Pontcysyllte aquaduct across the Dee which was opened in 1805. Cefn Mawr was directly
across the river in Ruabon parish, heavily industrialised with coal and iron works.
This matches the 1851 census for Cefn Mawr giving Simon as a collier, born in Ruabon in
1834. His mother Mary is a widow. If the family were living in Cefn Mawr at the time of
the 1841 census then you won't find them as the census for the whole of the parish of
Ruabon is 'missing'!
I can't see the family in 1861? They may have been in Broughton or in Bilston?
The only marriage which fits is that of Simon Thomas & Ann Williams at St Giles'
Parish Church, Wrexham in 1853. A copy of the marriage certificate should confirm his
father's name.
