I am looking for information on my mother's "Jones/Edwards" side of the
family, who lived in Denbigh, Wales. If anyone is familiar with the
following names, or can help me find them, I would love to exchange any
info that I gather here in the U.S. about the Jones' who emigrated to the
NY/NJ area.
My great-grandfather was JOHN HEBER JONES, SR. born possibly 10-31-1838
possibly in Denbigh or Hollywell. He was supposedly orphaned at the age of
15 and then came to the U.S. I'm trying to find out info on him after he
came here and locate his decsendants.
I don't know his father's first name, but on John's death certificate his
mothers name is listed as MARY ANN EDWARDS. Mary Ann's father's name was
EDWARD EDWARDS, ESQ. He was one of the first Town Councillors of Denbigh,
and he was a prominent member of the Weslyan Methodist Church in Denbigh.
John's father was an attorney-at-law and a solicitor (I thought they were
the same thing!), and he was also a prominent member of the Wesleyan
Methodist Church in Denbigh. John's father was believed to have started his
law practice in HOLYWELL.
The info on any siblings of John that we have are:
1. LUCRETIA - she was married to a man named MacVickers in Wales and
afterwards to a man named HARRISON, who was an American with relatives in
Virginia (possibly). Her address in 1892 was 9 RIDGE ROAD, LEEDS,
YORKSHIRE, ENGLAND.
2. RICHARD - he went to Anglesey, was a lumber merchant and was born
possibly on 5-3-1836.
3. CHARLES EDWARD - he was born possibly on 6-3-1834. He also came to the
U.S., but I don't know when. It is through his son, George, that we have
most of the info on John and his relatives in Wales. Apparently, George had
tried to locate information about his relatives according to a letter dated
1916 that George had written to his cousin, John Heber Jones, Jr.
We are starting with the probability that John and his sibling were born in
either Hollywell or Denbigh. Mary Ann probably married their father in
Denbigh, since that is where she seems to have been raised.
Some important information for anyone who has ever tried to locate (or
plans to in the future) John Heber Jones, Jr. and his decsendants here in
the U.S. Sometime in the 1890's ? (he was born 6-19-1871), he legally
changed his last name to Meade. The story he told his half-brother, Charles
Edward (my mother's father) is that a friend of his had gotten two jobs in
New Jersey, and that John could have one of the jobs if he wanted it, but
he would have to use the name Meade to take the job. I still have to find
out exactly when and where it was that he had his name changed.
So, as I said, if anyone can help me in locating these relatives, or has
any information on them, please contact me at gwrock(a)carroll.com. Thank you!
Sincerely, Elizabeth M. Wrocklage
