Wrexham, St. Giles
Church History
The parish church is considered to be one of the finest mediaeval churches in
Wales. The church was originally dedicated to St. Aegidus, which is the Latin
equivalent of St. Giles and St. Silin. It has close associations with Elihu
Yale (of Yale University fame) whose tomb lies not far from the tower. There
is known to have been a church on the site since the thirteenth century, but
the original church was destroyed by fire in 1463. It was rebuilt by 1472.
An inscription on the tower states that it had been completed by 1506, but
there is evidence that work continued for some time after that date. The
tower is said to have been the inspiration for the Victoria Tower,
Westminster.
Wrexham, St. Mark
Church History
The foundation stone of the new church, just off Regent Street, was laid in
August 1856; and the church, which was dedicated to St. Mark, was dedicated
on 21 May 1858.
The spire, which soared to a height of 200 feet, was not completed until 5
June 1862.
The church was closed in 1956, and was demolished shortly afterwards. The
site is now a multi-storey car park.
Wrexham, St. Michael
Church History
The foundation stone of the new church, in Poyser Street, was laid on 14
February 1912; and the church, which was dedicated to St. Michael and All
Angels, was consecrated on 24 September 1912.
The church was extensively refurbished in 1978; and was re-named as All
Saints in 1986.
