Subject: Re: [DEN] Bryn Dedwydd, Pentrefoelas
I wrote to the list to inquire if there is a particular place in Wales
that
the name Alwyn comes from.
However my mum's name is Alwyn. She saids that there is another way to
spell
the girls name.
Is Alwyn a popular name in Wales?
PS Alwyn is not very common here. I have never met another Alwyn.
Hi Lynda
Alwyn is usually as a male christian name. The female equivalent is Alwen.
There is a female name Alwenna, often shortened to Wenna. They are normally
associated with Wales and Welsh. Wyn(n)(e) and wen are Welsh words for white
and fair (Lit.pure).
Alwin is an Old English name found in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle together
with Aelwin and AEoelwine.
Best wishes
Howell
