Hello Listers,
My GGrandmother was Ann OTTEY bc 12 Dec 1839 Over Whitacre, Warks; her
parents were Joseph OTTEY bc 29 July 1810 Twycross, Leics. M (no date or
place) to Catherine (no surname) bc 1810 Harwarden, Flintshire.
Ann OTTEY m. 3 Dec 1855 All Saints Birmingham Edward JONES bc about 1827
(it says on his death certificate: in Liverpool, but I doubt it). When
Edward's son, also Edward JONES (bc 1856 Birmingham) married, 29 Dec 1884,
he gave his father's occupation as Scale-maker, but on his death
certificate as Inspector of Works.
Edward JONES Jr. was a Scale-maker with W. & T. Avery, Birmingham.
According to family stories, Edward Sr. brought TWO sons out to Victoria,
Australia and set them up in business. One died, the other went broke;
father set him up again and this time he was successful. The business card
says the business was set up in 1878 in Fitzroy (Victoria).
All three are buried in the Melbourne General Cemetery. His death
certificate states that when Edward JONES Sr. died in 1892, he had been in
the colony 5 years; when Ann died in 1891, hers stated that she had been in
the colony for 6 years!
Trying to find my JONES ancestors is a real brick wall!
I do know that Dad, a son of Edward JONES Jr., stayed with relatives in
*Denbigh* when on leave in WW1, but he didn't keep writing to them. When in
the UK in 1970, he went to Denbigh, expecting to find them still there (!)
and was dismayed to find the place had been bombed in WW2 and he couldn't
make out his surroundings with so many new buildings, so couldn't find his
relatives or their descendants.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
