Okay we have a small problem.
There are no entries for a John Davies marrying an Anne Jones between 1800-1820 in either Llandyrnog or Llanfair.
I do however have a baptism for John!
April 28th 1782, John, son of Richard Davies and Mary his wife.
I checked either side, there were no other John Davies baptised in the parish so by process of elimination it must be him.
I also found a number of children for John and Ann between 1814 and 1826 (including William) but since I'm about to get kicked out for lunch, I'll post the details when I get back home later tonight.

I also forgot to mention that I tried to find a baptism for Margaret Jeffreys but the baptism records only start at 1813 for Llannefydd. She would have been born between 1770-1884 at a guess.

Thank you for this great suggestion. I contacted them but unfortunately, because their file is so large, I will need to hire a professional researcher.
Much appreciated,

Local newspapers may have reported Samuel's death and could give further clues? Try the Llangollen Advertiser; Rhos Herald or the Wrexham Guardian (unfortunately the Cefn Chronicle had not started in 1901).

Yes, on closer examination I don't think this is the correct 1901 record. My Samuel was born 19 Nov 1870, Top of Bank, Chirk. Registration District Oswestry.
No the names of the children do not turn up anywhere in my Tree. Also I think that the Phoebe/Samuel Hughes family turn up in the 1911 Census too!
Thanks again,
Lois

I've looked again at the censuses and note that the Samuel Hughes I found in 1901 gives his birthplace as Broughton, whereas your Samuel in 1891 gives his birthplace as Ruabon.
Incidentally, Samuel and Phoebe (1901 census) have 4 daughters; Blodwen 6, Ethel May 4, Emily 2, Phoebe 1.
Do any of these names recur in your tree?
Tecwyn.

If Samuel died on active service then the regimental records should at least give details of his next of kin.
I believe that all of the KSLI records are held at the Shropshire Archive in Shrewsbury.

Thank you so much for the information and kind offer. It would be great if you could look up that record. However, I also wonder if the Phoebe and Samuel Hughes in the 1901 Census could be the correct record. Samuel died of Enteric Fever on 7 Sept 1901 while a Private with the 1st King's Shropshire Light Infantry in Puna, India. He died after the 1901 Census was taken. Perhaps he left for India sometime after the Census was taken, too. If so, the 1894 Marriage record could be the correct one.
Kind regards,
Lois

I found a Phoebe M Hughes in 1901, not widowed, but with husband Samuel, so the 1894 marriage was not your Samuel.
Looking further afeild from Wrexham, there's a Samuel Hughes marrying in Flint in 1892. Fortunately, it was a church wedding, so I can look it up in Parish Registers next week when I visit the Archives. It might give us a clue as to whether it is the correct one.
Tecwyn.

Lois,
There's something amiss with the dates you give!
If Samuel was born in 1880 and died in 1901, it's not possible for him to marry and have 2 daughters, one of whom appears to be about 10 years old.
Ah !! Just found him in 1891 - he's 20, so that works out better. Now for the daughter to be anywhere near 10 years old, Samuel, who was single in 1891, must have married shortly after that. A search of http://northwalesbmd.org.uk between 1891 and 1895 reveals only one marriage of a Samuel Hughes, registered in Wrexham. This was in 1894, to either Martha Williams or Phoebe Morgan Williams. (2 marriages per page)
Will now search the 1901 census, looking for a Martha Hughes or Phoebe Hughes, who is a widow with 2 young daughters.
Tecwyn.

Message Board Post:
I am looking for any details about the family of my Great-uncle Samuel Hughes. Samuel was born October 1880 to Thomas Hughes and Ann EDWARDS Hughes in Acrefair, Cefn Mawr, Wales. He died from Enteric Fever in February 1901 in Puna, India where he was serving as a Private with the First King's Shropshire Light Infantry.
I know he was married and had two daughters but I don't know his wife or his daughter's names or anything about them. He was married some time after the 1891 Census was taken. In the 1891 Census he was living at 13 Burton Terrace, Acrefair. I have an undated studio picture of him in uniform and his wife and two daughters. The oldest girl appears to be about 10 years of age.
I would love to be able to find living descendants of this family. Any help or suggestions will be much appreciated.
Thank you,
Lois

Is there anyone on the list who lives in Denbigh and could help me please?
My gggg grandfather was John Mostyn Esq of Segrwyd, and his obituary describes him as "a gentleman remarkable for having introduced the woollen manufacture into that county (Denbighshire) "
In the book Ancient and Modern Denbigh, published in 1836, it says
"woollen cloths were manufactured at the Old Factory, in Brook Lane, built by Mr. Mostyn of Segrwyd.... Tradition attributes the discontinuance of the woollen trade at Denbigh, to the loss of some valuable cargoes of fine cloths manufactured here, which were shipped for India. Numbers of the weavers enlisted for the American War. The Old Factory was afterwards occupied by Messrs. Douglass & Co., of Holywell, for picking and sorting cotton, and has since been converted into workshops fur coopers, joiners, skinners, &c."
The Old Factory and Brook Lane do not appear on moderrn maps, but from other references I think it was somewhere near the junction of Factory Ward and Panton Hall in modern Denbigh.
Can anyone who knows the area tell me if there are any signs of the Old Factory still remaining? If so I would very much appreciate a photo.
Any assistance or further information would be very gratefully received.
I have also posted this on the Clwyd list. Apologies for any overlap
Thank you
Roger
